Preview: Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8

Jeep Grand Cherokee that won't go off-road sounds about as likely as one which is capable of outrunning a Porsche. But that's what the legendary American firm is promising to launch next year.

The sensational new Grand Cherokee SRT-8 not only has limited ability in the rough stuff, but is staking a claim to be the fastest 4x4 in the world.

At £40,000, the 6.1-litre V8 costs around half as much as the Porsche Cayenne Turbo. It might sound like an unusual creation for an American maker renowned for its models' all-terrain ability, rather than their outrageous speed, but on paper the SRT-8 is quicker from 0-60mph than the flagship Cayenne.

The product focus used to be rugged off-road vehicle. Now these morons are changing the product focus. While it may introduce an exciting product it will destroy (dilute) the brands focus. This is similar to what Ford has done with Volvo by turning it into a performance brand (and failing at it) and moving away from its focus of safety first. Big mistakes. This will hurt Volvo and Jeep in the long term.

Jeep wanted to follow the steps of the Land Rover Sport. Jeep was just too cheap (as usual) to create a new model, rather it chose to add a Grand Cherokee performance version. Land Rover introduced a whole new model and left its Range Rover line intact. Smarter.

What is Jeep trying to be, rugged or sporty??? Make up your minds!
