Nissan LEAF to be priced between $25,000 to $33,000
According to Larry Dominique, vice president of product planning for Nissan North America Inc., Nissan plans to price the new LEAF electric-car to compete with $25,000 to $33,000 mass-market cars in the United States. Dominique said that does not include any government incentives offered to buyers, reports Automotive News.

“Competitive pricing is going to allow mass-market appeal, which is going to set Nissan apart,” Dominique said.

Around 5,000 units of the Nissan LEAF EV will be available in the United States later next year. The first 5,000 customers will take...

That plus a $10,000 battery lease.

The battery cost $10,000, estimated battery life 5 years.
Nissan sells the car but leases the battery.
The battery lease is not $10,000 for 5 years.

OK, $2000/year for the battery.
Assume one drives 12K per year, that is 120 recharge of 20KWH. 1KWH is 15c for PG&E.
120x20x0.15 = $360 electricity bill.
Total cost of operation (12K miles/year) = $2360.
Now, you gasoline Versa.
Assume 25mpg (combined). 12000/25*$2.5 = $1200.
OK. gasoline is cheaper to operate. However, let us not forget the government rebate of upto $7500 (maybe $4-5000 for Leaf).

As you can see, the computation is not as simple with rebates involved.
Don't forget that an EV is much simpler to operate and to maintain than vehicles with gas engines.

Your assumption is incorrect. BMWspies BMW owners are supposed to be lease experts. “OK assume a BMW cost $36,000 therefore 3 year lease is $12,000 per year.” The cost of a lease (battery or car) is much, much cheaper than cost of item. By leasing the battery, the overall cost can be lower, and it can offer Nissan the ability to replace the batteries as the technology improves. Nissan is aiming to make the monthly cost of ownership of a Leaf to be less than a comparable gas car. The monthly cost of the battery, plus the electric charge, will be less than the cost of gasoline. Expect that the monthly payment for the car, the monthly battery lease fee, and the cost of the electricity to make its run, should wind up less than a gas powered car of the same size and trim level.

The exterior is very ugly on this car & looks rather dated. It looks like a concept car from the early 90's & basically a 90's interpretation of what cars in the future were thought to have looked like.

If you think that is bad, then you should look at what the govt 3 have to offer.
