Another shocker! Caddy DTS lags foreign makes

A $5,000 cut in the price of a car can cover a lot of sins. A name change can help, too, especially if the original one conjured images of old guys wearing fedoras and smoking big cigars.

Those two changes, plus a whole bunch of smaller ones, are what Cadillac is offering for 2006 in the DTS, an improved version of the car formerly known as the De- Ville.

Prospective buyers will have to overlook its front-wheel-drive layout - rapidly fading from fashion in luxury and performance cars - and other shortcomings compared to competitors, such as a transmission with only four speeds at a time when five and six are the norms and one carmaker, Mercedes, is offering seven.

I think this another care destined to be straight to rental.

...This car was obviously ignored in the Cadillac make-over. What GM SHOULD do is feature all of their latest tech on a flagship model. Like MB does. Like Audi does. Like BMW does.

Instead we get a front wheel drive car with a four speed auto. Welcome to 1992!

I think the DTS is one of the better looking caddy designs of recent. I used to love the STS, they have killed the styling in my opinion. Driving wise it's a boat----but that's the market they typically appeal to, retired rich folk.

Ollie,

I disagree. I think that they can alienate their core base. Assuming that the "core base" buys on brand alone, they will purchase anyways. You want to go after recent retirees that don't want "an old mans car." My Dad's almost 60, and he wouldn't be caught dead in that pile of plop.

they should have improved the car (Although you can argue that a FWD platform is already a bad starting point).

Reducing price screams "we overpriced, our car is not good enough, we admit it"

People may buy more of the reduced price car but the reputation is damaged.

It seems that GM thinks that the Cadillac brand, all of a sudden and due to its recent improvements and successes, can match in pricing long established luxury brands. Not so. Reputation takes time to build. It may or may not be that the product is on par with current market leaders (IMO, they are not) but the reputation certainly is not. Remember that a large percentage of people consider car buying an emotional decision.

I recommend you find new Pricing Gurus.

Everbody:

Save yourself thousands and buy a 5 series BMW. After a few years it will cost you the same, considering that the 5 is one of the top five cars to hold it's value.

They will have to offer incentives to move this walker-with-wheels in less than a year.

Pathetic, our domestic auto companies.
