REVIEW: Mercedes' C63 AMG Performs White Magic
The sound of a car can tell a lot. Almost like a picture, an exhaust note can say 1,000 words. For instance, when you hear an Aston Martin or Ferrari V12, singing their siren-like harmonies, it is clear they are trying to lure you in to seduce you. Then there are brutes.

Sounding more like a chainsaw on steroids or a boater’s dream, there are not too many cars that classify in this realm. And, rightfully so. Usually these cars have monstrous V8s bulging out of engine bay and enough torque to warrant a visit to the emergency room, simply to remove the silly smile off your face. That is the brilliant thing about performance cars, they are edgy and downright in your face; a proper sports car does not apologize for its behavior. Neither does the subject of this review.

With its blatant overindulgence in guttural, V8 burbles and unique whip cracking finale, the C63 AMG has one of the most radical stock exhaust notes I have heard.

It is as though the 63 met the innocent C-class, took it on a bender and de-flowered it. The brilliant noise provides this C-class with serious character. Previous experience in Mercedes-Benz’s products left me yearning for more as they came off as uninspired and isolated automobiles – the 63 could not be more disparate....

Not having driven either car but have driven the previous model M3 and AMG C I would choose the new M3. I really like the precision that the M3 has always delivered.

Ill take the C63 over the M3 sedan and the M3 coupe over both.

The only thing I can agree with here is that Astons and Ferrari both make beautiful noises. The c, on the other hand, is nothing special. It sounds flatulent and embarrassing; the M3, rs4, and just about every other V8 on the road sounds better.

I'll take the M3 sedan with the 63 engine. ;-)

I love this car I even like the non sport model benz did an excellent job for this car than the previous model. the only thing i noticed and dont like is the center console it looks like something nissan or infiniti designed other than that the exterior is ON POINT i love it. nice job MB.

I totally agree with you about certain elements of the interior. It took me a minute to get use to the steering wheel, but close examination shows just unacceptable use of plastic for the steering mounted controls, and the Astra-ish style buttons on the center panel for stereo controls. Outside that, the car slightly edge out the 3 Series for me. All things being equal, I would take the M3 over the C63 AMG. Of course with Euro cars, the quality is there, but look at the plain plastics used in the interiors for the entry level vehicles, and it kinda bothers me. Audi is the only company that focus on the interior from top to bottom in their lines.

So let's see. Every single car in this class has plastic on the dashboard - and lots of it. Audi, BMW and Mercedes all use the same kind of quality plastic if we are honest and objective. So what exactly gives Audi the advantage?

In my opinion there is no such thing as a "cheap interior" in this class. They're all good.

to me the interior isnt cheap BUT it looks like it was cheaply designed. just reminds me too much of a nissan styled interior.

take a look at this link and then take a look at the interior pic above

I'm not a fan. I don't believe stuffing massive engines with silly horespower numbers is the way to achieve "true" performance. By "true" I mean an agile, lithe, balanced, and sharp dance partner when the roads start curving.

"True" performance would be the BMW M3.

"True" performance would be:
1. Mazda Miata
2. Porsche Boxster

Both are based on simple principles of weight and balance.

In fact M3 is a better performer if you are looking for track precision. C63 is the Kind of car that I will recommend only for experienced drivers looking for car that won't break in their hands, otherwise (specialy if you are an M3 driver or a mom without driving experience) that car is too dangerous for you. This car is fun but requires mastery cause it is more than 400 pund heavier and that means drifting and such amount of power, is very easy to lose control. M3 is more for people that won't be drifting or Ladies that do not know how to handle such amount of power,(that could be to much for that high reving weak torque engine with delicate transmission). I'm not sexist, there are a lot of good women drivers. M3= track drivers that do not like the posibility of drifting. C63= Fun. However Most of my time is in highways, and there, 63 rules cause there it have better performance. That's final.

I own 2 apartment buildings in my city and use to drive Benzes to deliver to customers houses as a side job. ( It gets too boring when there's nothing to do with the buildings,so i found that job for fun) The dealership is Pepe Benz in White Plains NY. Anyways, I've driven almost every Benz available today including the Black Series, AMG's and SLR (for 2 min :( ) I have also driven the E92 M3,coupe though not sedan. The C63 is such a raw car that it makes the M3 seem tame. You know, people judge the handling on Benzes ,but in the real world these cars handle beautifully. Driving the car normally, you will never hear tire squeel or feel like the suspension or tires are giving up. The car is very stable planted and the ride is forgiving. Now, when you mash the throttle its a different story. The power in this car is amazing. Tire smoke, rumbling engine, great up and downshifts. The car is really a beast. You know what it is about the M3 I like? Its more thought out I guess, but what I really like is that it is predictable. If you swing that rear end out,you can correct it at any time. In the M you always (or feel like you always) have control and can make the car do what you want. If you lose the back of the C63 for a second, its not going to be pretty.

I have a manual M3 convertible and the performance is out of this world but lately I have been seeing more and more c63 amgs out there and they do sound unreal. Looks are subjective I like 2 doors better then 4 and there is nothing better then the m3 with the top down, but with that being said in a straight line i was blown away by 2 different c63s. now granted they have me by 30-40 hp but the car was awsome going straight but i had both of them as the roads turned and i wasnt even in the coupe with the carbon fiber top. IMO pick your poison and have fun you cant go wrong with either car.

markanthony0419: Thats true man...M3 if you need a Surgical Precision device, but I do not want to understimate you, I know the M3 and the C63, and trust me, two good drivers in those cars will have a real dogfight, In straigh line the benz have the advantage (a very small advantage), turning, the M3 owns the edge (an very small edge). The winner will depend of the place and the expertise of the drivers...Track= M3, Open Road= C63, but as most of the things in life, the outcome may depend on who have the biggest heart.
