Review: Audi A4 avant 2.0t

Sometimes a car just fits. Maybe you can see the one you want from a mile away, or maybe it comes as a complete surprise. Maybe you end up test driving all competitors and analyze all the factors before finding that perfect fit. Whichever way, there is always one car that just feels right.

For one person, it might be a compact sports coupe with good handling and a peppy little motor. For another, it might be an SUV with a commanding seating position and the perfect height to easily install that child safety seat in the back without having to contort your body awkwardly day in and day out. It could even be a modest little subcompact that zips in and out of traffic and can make any tiny space into a parking spot. To each his or her own.

As soon as I sat down inside the 2006 Audi A4 Avant, I got that feeling. Within seconds I had the seat adjusted for perfect support of my legs and back - I swear Audi must have used a dummy that was the same height and proportions as me when they designed their seats.

I agree with the review author -- the A4 Avant is one surprisingly handy vehicle. Despite its compact external dimensions, you can throw quite a bit of cargo in the back. The rear seats are best for kids, but the legroom is better than many utility vehicles. I find the 2.0T/ 6speed manual combination to be excellent. The manual is very smooth, and gives the driver excellent sporting control. Best of all, cruising on the interstate will get you 30mpg if you're not heavy on the accelerator. Not bad! For those who demand more power, other engine options or aftermarket kits will bring the power to the stratosphere.

BMW fans: if i were to race and had an extra $15k to spend, i would get the RWD BMW 3-series wagon. But since this is a road car for hauling around 4 people and their luggage in comfort, the Audi is excellent, and a far better value. The Audi interior is better quality, the reliability better, and the ergonomics fantastic. Moreover, Audi's quattro AWD is amongst the best system i have ever driven on slippery roads. Unless you need towing capability or you drive on forest trails often, the Avant will easily replace any compact utility vehicle.
