Cash For Clunkers Programs Success Starting To Take A Toll On Charities
The popular "cash-for-clunkers" program is boosting U.S. auto sales and manufacturing but is also slashing donations to charities that rely on gifts of cars to fund social programs, charity officials say.

Volunteers of America and other charities that receive tens of thousands of cars each year said such donations have quickly fallen up to 12 percent -- and fear a 25 percent drop eventually, or over $100 million -- as owners rush to trade gas guzzlers for new fuel-efficient models while federal rebates last.

"We started seeing it right away in July" when the program began, said Jim Hartman, vice president of vehicle donations at Volunteers of America, a nationwide charity. "It varies by market, but there's been an 11 to 12 percent drop compared with last year."

Can you explain why the Cash for Clunkers program is a Socialized program?

The money for cash for clunkers is Socialized money. It comes from tax payers. The dealers are selling cars and the used car dealers have less cars to sell. Many of the dealers that coughed up the $3,500 to $4.500 rebate have not been paid by Obama yet and they were supposed to be paid already. Obam just needs to play basketball, fly Air Foprce One around New York and visit Yellowstone National Park.

This entire program was created to get cars and trucks off the road that Liberal's believe to be the cause of Global Warming.

Here in SoCal for the next 7 days the weather is 6 degrees below normal.

It's a bunch of the sky is falling crap!

EL34,

You just dont like Obama (for whatever reasons) and will use anything (true or not) to justify that stance. And I think that you should look the word "Socialism" up in the dictionary.

There's this woman that one day moved away from her abusing husband and into a shelter. After a while she got a job and she had no transportation to get to that job, nor could she afford any.
She now drives what used to be my old car, which she got for free via a local charity (I mean a real charity, not the kind that sells your donations at auction and spends 1/10 dollars on actual charity).

I wonder what she thinks about Obama's program, I wonder if she realizes that this car would be a pile of scrap now under this program. I wonder if she's full of "hope".

EL34,

You americans are used to hardcore rightists politicians, so maybe Obama and Clinton may appear to you as being closer to communism than capitalism. You're all wrong, it's only a question of perception.

Obama is to socialism what Kim Jung Il is to democracy.

Yes,im getting that error too. Anyway, its always good to be able to donate to charity, but you have to take care of yourself too. If an oppertunity comes up that you can save money on something you need, than you should worry about yourself. If its not something u need daily to get to work, stores etc than ok.

I think that the falloff in donations is a good thing in the short term. That means less crap will be going to the receiving organisations. In a little while the donations will pick back up. The difference this time is that more fuel efficient and cleaner models will be available. It's a teething pain, but it will improve. Many of these cars are actually worth more scrapped and recycled than they are as a whole. Proper management of ths recycling will yield revenue as well.

And to the political experts around here, this is my advice. READ A BOOK. LEARN what communism, socialism, democracy, and capitalism are for yourself instead of being fed garbage by politicians with an agenda. If the United States was a communist country you people would be against capitalism, so quit the bullshit. Why does everything that doesn't match your ideal have to be wrong instead of different. It's this intolerance that caused Nazism, Fascism and a host of other queer ideologies to flurish. America be warned.

And another thing. Mr EL34. Have a little respect for the Russian people. What gives you the right to deface the Soviet flag? If they had put a picture of Dimitry Medvedev on Old Glory you would be having a fit. Find another way to state your dislike of Barack Obama that doesn't seek to disrespect the national symbols of others.

Tango,

If that's really you in the picture, then you're young enough to learn:

The soviet union and the Russian people were not exactly the same thing and the soviet flag was not a national symbol as the Soviet Union comprised of many formerly-free nations, all of which were "asked" to join the union at gun-point by the freedom-loving russians. The Soviet Union was one of history's worst abominations and by sheer numbers alone, the Nazi horrors were nothing compared to those of Stalin and the Bolshevics ... so no, there's not much respect to be had for either the Soviet Union or their flag.

I find EL34's avatar to be a rather appropriate metaphor.
The Soviet Union was created as a result of the Bolshevic revolution, which brought, wait for it, CHANGE. It was change in the name of the people, the poor, the working class, pretty much what's preached by Washington today. Just like the Washington "elites" of today, the bolshevics deemed the rich to be evil and the enemy of the people ... lots of similarities, really.
All of this is very theoretical to you Americans, and you can't properly understand it from soundbites on TV or such. Read Solzjenitsyn or anything you can find, written by people who have lived through it. It's very real and very different from what some idiot professor may have told you in college or from what you hear from Washington today.
Read and learn ... and more importantly, don't let it happen again!

Now back to our regular BMW vs. Lexus program ...

Cheers!
:)

Tango,

Just several points:

1) Because an American supports capitalism does not necessitate that they have been indoctrinated through their experience. Although some undoubtedly are.

2) "Why does everything that doesn't match your ideal have to be wrong instead of different"

Do not confuse cultural relativism with universal relativism- the truth is not relative. Simply, there are viewpoints that are more rational and supportable than others. There are also viewpoints that are simply wrong (from a rational evidential perspective). The more a theory makes statements about nature and reality, the more susceptible it is to empiricism. Don't misinterpret me though, I agree that people need to refrain from listening to politicians- as 99.999% are half-wits.

BTW SP2Hybrid I am glad you mentioned it; Solzhenitsyn (this is the spelling I am familiar with) is a wonderful read (for those who are unaware he won the Nobel Prize in Literature about 30 years ago)

How can we help the poor if we're ALL poor?!
This isn't some sort of psychology class ... diffusion of responsibility, pluralistic ignorance, and all.

We started the charities because we felt that we were able to support ourselves at the time, and the extra money wouldn't make a difference if it were given away.

@ SP2Hybrid: Thanks for the insight but you misunderstand my point. The American people have ben lead to view the Soviet Union as an evil empire, which it was not. It may not have been the American ideal but it certainly was not evil. The Soviet government was guilty of many attrocities, but guess what, so has the American government. Like that fact or not. Yes indeed that's me in the picture, and contrary to what it may look like I am a) not as young as you would like to think and b) I'm not an American so I have a pretty neutral view of both countries. The ultimate fact is that EL34's use of the Soviet flag is not appropriate because it is not an internationally condemned symbol, the same way that a Swastika is. Perhaps an unfair condemnation in its own right because it was originally a symbol of peace (and still remaisn so in many Asian cultures) manipulated by mad men for their own agendas. And for the record, a lot of Russians now regret the break-up of the Soviet Union because with the breakup came levels of crime and violence that never existed before. The use of the Soviet flag in a negative way is disrespectful. Period.

@ cdoke: My reference to "you people" (which is what I suspect sparked your first comment above) was aimed at the right wing folks around here that pollute otherwise good automotive chatter. I should have been a bit clearer with that. That said though, I am aware that many Americans are able to look at things rationally. Those same Americans are the ones now going out and supporting American businesses and American workers at a time when the country needs it. The likes of EL34 are calling for these Americans to boycott UAW manufacturers because they supported Obama. In effect this moron is calling for the American people to boycott its own factories and bring about even greater suffering. This is not the voice of a true American. True Americans come together when times are rough, fix the problems, then get back to their political sidelines. At least...that's what I've been indoctrinated into thinking! LOL. The tone of American political tribalism is getting out of control. I live in a country where just mentioning your political slant can get you fired or worse, killed if one isn't careful. Majority of Third World countries are like that and it does not lend itself to progress. Americans be warned.

Anyway, enough of this drivel. Back to the Lexus...BMW...whatever...let's talk cars dammit!

"The American people have ben lead to view the Soviet Union as an evil empire, which it was not."

That was my main point: yes, it really was an evil empire. I grew up under its influence. We went hungry at times because the government decided how much and what food we could buy, we drove crapmobiles because we didn't need no stinkin' imperialistic vehicles (the kind that actually worked) and other such little commie pleasures.
Not evil? Drive a Moskvitch or a Lada for a day! :)

(nice segway back to cars, wasn't it?)

Charities are suffering because the country is suffering. Its not just those that rely on the cars. Its across the board. That is typically what happens in a recession. People have less excess to give away. What do they expect?
