Customer Satisfaction Study Puts Big 3 In Top Five, Cadillac Tied For No. 1 With Lexus

The American Customer Satisfaction Index for automakers from the University of Michigan is being released today, and sitting at the very top are Cadillac and Lexus in a two-way tie for first place. The study continues its Detroit lovefest by giving the third spot to a tie-up of Lincoln-Mercury, Buick and Honda. And that moves us into spot No. 7, where Toyota shows up in a tie with Volkswagen.

Great news for American automakers? Great fodder for the marketing departments at least. Automotive News (sub. req.) quotes Claes Fornell, the director of the MSU's National Quality Research Center as saying the great leap in customer satisfaction is, oddly enough, at least partially due to a huge drop in sales. Fornell says that the few people buying American cars are hardcore American car drivers, and are more likely to respond as satisfied to a survey.

The good news, Fornell says, is that a smaller, more devoted group of buyers is more likely to be repeat buyers. In a New York Times story, Fornell says, "In most cases that's not a good thing, to increase the satisfaction of their customers by losing them. But in Detroit's case, it's probably not that bad. It leaves them with a smaller, more satisfied customer base that they might be able to manage better and build from."

In the study, Volkswagen was the most improved, bettering its placement by 6.2% from last year, and Ford jumped 5%.

Yep, smartness wins in the end, they're all back to v-dub after their short Toyota escapade.

Interesting... this survey would seem to indicate that people still like American vehicles :P

And Mitchell, I'd imagine all those rust issues and other assorted recalls are really hurting Toyota right now. If you bought an American car/truck where the frame was literally falling apart 6 years after you bought it, I'd imagine you'd be equally pissed.

tied with lexus for #1. that's a toyota company. so i'd imagine that the rust issues with the toyota's that are mostly unfounded just like the GTR transmission issues arent swaying customers anywhere away from Toyota, nor Lexus. again, you lexus and toyota haters, lose

Why is it that every time I see the word haters my impression of the person lowers? Seriously, using it makes you sound like you are 12. It's almost as bad as calling someone racist because they don't like hyundai/kia.

The issue is with Toyota trucks. What a stupid overall statement to say that all Toyotas are as good as Lexus, so the rust issue isn't there. Toyota loose because really what doesn't Toyota do for anyone. If we as consumers don't purchase, the bigger looser is a company that will go under. You see we can't loose because there isn't anything to loose.

Invisible, he said the weight to prove the study wrong was on YOU, not him. If you believe different than he does and than the study does PROVE IT.

What does toyota make that I want...umm nada...zip...Lexus is nice if you get an Is-F though. Cadillac CTS I drove was kind of a pig and had a tire inflation goop kit instead of even a temp spare. Not a lot of car for 44,000 bucks they were asking.

Can you explain how the IS-F is a good value at its price?

I know a Ferrari doesn't have a spare and I know why, I was being sarcastic. In my view I see penn as being a hypocrite for criticizing certain cars for leaving it out, and then totally ignoring the fact that his favorite cars leave them out as well.

As soon as indicators, even ones that show a improvement of domestic production cars when it comes to quality, some says no way. Most don't realize domestics were the standard that everyone measured success by. A return to that, even if it looked some in the face, will not be enough to change minds, so it is what it is.
