Mazda to introduce a more fuel-efficient engine by 2011
Mazda will be coming out with a range of fuel-efficient vehicles in 2011. The Japanese manufacturer aims to improve fuel efficiency across its product lineup by as much as 30% by 2015. Mazda is reportedly focusing on four-cylinder and rotary engines.

However, Mazda has not revealed which models would be powered by improved powertrains. While previous reports speculate that the redesigned MX-5 convertible and Mazda5 will receive the greener engine, Seita Kanai, head of Mazda Motor Corp.’s R&D division, counters that the entire range would be provided new engines by 2015.

The rotary engine is inherently prone to high fuel consumption. It doesn't build a lot of torque, so that means it has to be revved a lot harder to get anything done. That means fuel consumption. Unless they plan to use turbo and supercharging to improve low-end torque then there's not much that I see that can be done.

Rotary + turbo is common.
All Mazda rotary engines are turbo-charged.

30% by 2015? HA! And I love the title: "a more fuel efficient engine by 2011". As if that is not what every company is doing all the time.

By 2015 I'll be looking at cars like Tesla Model S. I won't buy a new car with an ICE engine after 2015 anymore. Effects of peak oil will start hitting us in our faces right around 2015.

yea the person in the rotary will be driving by as you are stuck at the eco fag electric charging station with all the other eco fags.

Honestly if they dropped a rotary with 300hp in a new rx car i wouldnt care about mpg. The renesis motor is leaps ahead of my FD rx-7.Smoother,better mpg, more balanced, quieter etc. A turbo and some fine tuning will help the rotary a lot,but theres issues of heat and reliability with seals etc.I get maybe 13-15 mpg in my car and i have no catalytic converter. When i had a cat i was getting a lot more. Other than that, the motor got flooded once cuz im stupid. (never start a rotary motor and turn it off without warming it up)Mazda came out with a ECU flash and took care of that though. I cant wait to see how much better the next rotary is.

To make the rotary efficient mazda is planning on a dual stage direct injection fuel delivery system. A couple months ago I read that they were playing around with injector placement to optimize efficiency and emissions.
