BMW X6 M Road Test

BMW X6 M Road Test
When folks first happen upon BMW’s peculiarly proportioned X6, they can’t get over its skyscraper butt. Many can’t get around it, either. Were you to walk into the X6’s liftgate at midnight outside the Sidetrack Tap, the thing would nail you not in the gut but in the Adam’s apple. But we’re not here to dissect styling. The proposition before us is power. One would have thought that the 400 horses under the hood of the X6 xDrive50i might have been sufficient. BMW’s M division didn’t think so. And thus we have the X6 M depicted here, which is to the evolution of SUVs sort of what the appendix is to the evolution of Homo sapiens.

To the 4.4-liter V-8, the ever-tinkering Bavarians have added new pistons, cylinder heads formed of the same material used in their diesel engine, a new intake manifold, a crossover exhaust manifold that connects both cylinder banks, a finned aluminum oil pan, altered cam timing, and two new twin-scroll turbos that provide max boost of 17.4 psi, which ought to Chernobyl just about anything made of aluminum. And there are even larger intercoolers in the grille, which look like the air inlets for the Pentagon’s backup generator. This particular recipe yields 555 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque rolling out as early as 1500 rpm. Which should be fun. On the other hand, Frisbee golf is fun. But does anyone take it seriously?

What, exactly, do you do with a vaguely nonsensical 555-horse SUV? Our answer: Subject it to a nonsensical vehicular triathlon.

"the quickest production SUV we’ve ever tested"

" X6 M’s lap time would have earned it a pole position in a Spec Miata race"

I still don't get it.

just another option when your in the market for a car that can lap the ring as fast as an M3, and go off road with the right tires on it.

what an idiotic monstrosity. lets hope BMW reassures us with a class-leading new 5-series, followed by an inspiring new 1-series coupe.

Quite amazing that they can make a car destined to be terrible, quite satisfying.

Very impressive. I use to think these over powered suv's were pointless until i drove my cousins carerra white cayenne turbo s. Its so much fun and handles better than most cars i have driven. I would consider one of these cars if i was in the market, maybe next year.

theres never a point to these uber-performance SUV, but they'll always be a market niche for them, for those who doesn't mind spending 100K-150K on these machines without a need for justification!

Why is there no point? If you have the money, why not have a truck you can use in the snow and for towing and interior space while at the same time having 500+hp and sport tuned suspension?

The X6 is quite an imposing looking vehicle, I'll give it that. The huge wheels alone draw attention. And when in diesel form (as many of them are around here) they have a very distant, but muted diesel clatter, followed by a growl coupled to turbo whistle as it accelerates away from the standstill. I'm not a diesel fan, but I give BMW props for putting it out there. I just think that they could have captured an entirely new genre by making it a 3 door instead of a 5.

It looks like something EL34 would have designed. Ugh.

Kind of like an elephant doin' tap dance, you're left faintly bemused by the whole act, but not entirely sure it belongs anywhere outside a circus.

X6 should have its own pavilion at the local zoo, it's THAT weird.

Where is all the hate mails? Well nevermind. The car in all honesty, is pointless. I like the way it stands out and boy does that engine seem awsome. I think it redeems itself by being a brilliant engineering exercise. Getting something that huge to perform and handle the way it claims to handle is just purely brilliant. Imagine what this drivetrain could do for the next gen 5-series and the M5.

This vehicle is simply amazing. its for the Alpha in the group. You dont need to have an all purpose vehicle. If that was the case, there would be no reason for porsche. But, this vehicle is for some one who likes the ride height and size of an SUV, but has the power and handling of a track car. I would take this vehicle in a heartbeat!
