Inside Line:Track Tested: 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 vs. 2009 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S
Inside Line tests hundreds of vehicles a year, but not every vehicle gets a full write-up. The numbers still tell a story, though, so we present "IL Track Tested." It's a quick rundown of all the data we collected at the track, along with comments direct from the test drivers. Enjoy.

The whole idea of a high-performance sport-utility vehicle is a little tough for us to swallow. It's a totally nonsensical concept, yet it continues to thrive even in the face of expensive gas and even more expensive vehicles.

That said, who wouldn't appreciate driving a 2-ton, four-wheel-drive vehicle that can run 13s in the quarter-mile? There aren't many that can, but we've tested two that impressed us.

Most recently, it was the 2009 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S that rolled through the garage and blew us away with its 550-horsepower V8. Then again, it should for $139,000. If your budget doesn't allow for such extravagance, the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is the next best thing. For a mere $45K, it offers a similar experience. How similar? See for yourself in our latest head-to-head match-up straight from the test track.

140K for the Cayenne Turbo S! I'mm sorry, for that price I'd take an X6M and save 40K. Porsche needs to lay off the crack pipe when it comes to pricing. The Cayenne Turbo S is pretty ugly too, but that seems to be hereditary in the Porsche family.

well, if its not for you, its not for you. But it is for people who want to spend 140K on a Porsche.

Somebody shopping for Cayenne doesn't care if they throw $140K out the window.

Porsche can charge whatever they want. They have a loyal following. It's not like they were just created. The name has heritage.

I like how the Jeep can maintain some subtlety. I'd love to smoke a guy in his little sportscar with the SRT8 SUV.

The porsche guys hate the SRT GC. Just like the Corvette guys hate the Viper.

These so called exclusive car companies can justify the price tag that makes them double of other car companies despite the performance superiority of the lesser marquee. They often site heritage, passion and overall "feel". But, when it comes to this comparison how can porsche justify the price tag. The heritage? Jeep has way more heritage than porsche with 4x4. Passion? Is there any passion with a stretched out porsche? Feel? Nonexistent. This car simply sucks. Porsche simply sucks..Proud owner of Audi R8..

I drove both cars. The srt8 once and the cayenne turbo s a few times (my cousin owns a white one) The jeep is more raw. Everything on it is decent. Has a better sounding motor and is more practical. The porsche is more fun to drive and feels a lot faster. More technology and gadgets. I'd take the srt8 not because of price, but because its more rigid and you dont feel bad making it dirty or taking it off road and beating on it. The porsche makes you feel guilty if you get in it with dirty shoes or if you take it off road and get mud on it. It feels more sensitive and thats not what you really want in one of these trucks.

Why is the Porsche so heavy? 600lbs more than the Jeep! That is why it isn't any faster than the Jeep. You can never tell anyone that there ride is a waste of $$ Although I wouldn't waste my money on a Porsche.

Probably because the SRT-8 jettison its transfer box and other off-road goodies?

Inline 6, according to these numbers the Jeep is faster in many areas, and it wouldn't surprise me that the Cayenne is faster in other magazines, there may be better drivers, ideal conditions...The point here is that the Jeep is almost 3x cheaper, and I would rather drive the Cayenne, the Jeep isn't what I would consider off road worthy, so it wouldn't be that versatile for me to want the $45,000 wehicle.

I'd take the ML63 AMG over these two any day. Much less expensive than Porsche and much better looking.
