Demand For Lexus HS250h Exceeds Estimates 20 Fold: Delay In US Shipment Possible

Demand For Lexus HS250h Exceeds Estimates 20 Fold: Delay In US Shipment Possible
Booming orders in Japan for the new Lexus HS 250h sedan may pinch supply of the brand's first dedicated hybrid when it goes on sale in the United States next month.

In its first month in Japan, the car racked up 10,000 orders or about 20 times Toyota Motor Corp.'s initial sales target of 500 vehicles a month.

Customers wanting an HS 250h now face a six-month wait in Japan, meaning a car ordered today will be delivered in February, said Toyota spokeswoman Monika Saito.

The surge in demand could affect supply of the Japan-made car to U.S. dealerships.

"We hope there won't be a problem, but we'll see," Saito said.

Toyota Prius monthly sales in Japan have been up to 15 000 in may 2008 to 10 500 to may 2009, about the same for the Insight since it's debut.

500 a month was conservative for the least, now the HS is only selling as expected and they are using their own conservative measures a marketing tool.

Did you know that Lexus has been selling on average just over 1000 cars per month in Japan so far this year? 500 is almost half the original monthly sales, hardly conservative.

fanboy:

just because lexus is a failure in japan, does it mean they should call anything that isn't a total failure a success? please explain.

All I'm pointing out is that 500 is not a conservative estimate by Lexus Japan according to their total monthly sales. And they did not call the HS250h a success either. It is just you and your imagination.

And Lexus has been selling in relatively small numbers in Japan only because they've been selling just 4 models there, unlike the German makes that achieve sales by spamming 10s of models including many econoboxes all over the range.

Higher price, lower mileage. Sales through the roof. Let's face it, snobbery matters.

htat headline is as ridiculous as toyota's 500 unit goal for the HS250.

why only 500 cars in a nation of 120 million people? perhaps so they could say that they exceeded it?

is this just another marketing/PR tactic?

Of course it is. They used this same trick with the toyota ls and is-c or whatever that thing is called. I could tell based on the products they bring out that the higher-ups are lacking something upstairs, but clearly they aren't THAT stupid.

Are you serious? You think all 120 million people are potential luxury car buyers?

don't misquote me...i said a nation of 120 million people they should be able to sell more than 500 cars/month. the US population is 300 million people and lexus is able to sell 25,000 car/month.

don't you think there are more than 500 customers/month who can afford this car in japan?

enthusiastx11.. you'd be wrong on the Japanese Badge Whore statement, they are more into qualiy rather than badges.. That's better than being a badge whore is it not ?

No. If being a brandwhore means selling more cars than Lexus, then it is always a good thing. /sarcasm

The Toyota Corolla LX-H would be a more appropriate name. I swear I will get a great laugh when I finally see one on the road.

well, they must have a totally inept marketing department in japan (unlike toylex in the US). it's pretty awful to be off on sales estimates by 2000% don't you think?

a badgewhore? toyota doesn't even badge their cars with the toyota symbol in japan. all their cars are badged according to the name of the car. For instance there is a Toyota crown, with a crown for the badge. Lexus has the LS, The IS, SC and the GS in Japan. How many differen't models is that? IS has the 250 the 350 and the F, GS has the 350 and the 460. The SC is only one model. And a few hyrbid versions of the others. That's their cars, they do have the SUVS but in total 6 models. Then the HS will be 7. Which you can compare to other car makers notably luxury car makers and they have over 15. Hence the sales, and Lexus isn't anymore than a couple years old. The models that lexus has were all upscale toyota's before. The IS=Altezza for example. So you do the math.

Lexus is now 4 years old in Japan. Was in 2005 when they introduced Lexus to their home market, and that was the year where all Lexus models started to not be based on any Toyotas models in their home market.
