RANT: Aren't we all car lovers here?

Everyday I come and look at this site filled with an ecclectic mix of car news and articles. But everytime I seem to look in the comment sections of the articles, I see people hard at work trying to start a fight with others about which type, or brand, or country of origin of car is better. Why divide yourselves that way? We are all car lovers here, else we wouldn't read the articles posted here. A love for cars shouldn't change just because of where it came from, but instead we should all be able to just appreciate the fact that we live in a world where we have cars. I know we are entitled to free speech and all, but I would love to be able to read an article here with people just giving their honest opinion about each car or story instead of being unfair to the cars.

Really I dont think that everyone here likes cars..If you own a Prius not only do you not like cars but you dont like driving either. I have never meet anyone with a Prius that likes to drive. They think of it as just a way to get to work and that everyone should be like them.

That's probably not fair to say. I'd suggest we all like cars -- just for different reasons. Even the Prius owner.

That's the thing that I belief starts most of the contention here. And by the way, I have no explanation of why it's so much worse here than on any other forum. The only possibility is that there seems to be greater tolerance to the outrageous comments. Maybe it wouldn't be such a wild-wild-west forum if these angry folks were banned from the site more often. Listening Agents? Maybe Autospies needs a sheriff.

One other point; Some like cars mostly for their performance and would buy the car even if it only had an AM radio as long as it could take a right turn at 40mph without spilling their coffee. Others could care less about that and are interested in the comforts and amenities it offers. A third key group gives priority to the exterior beauty and would not own a car (regardless of it's other qualities) if they didn't like how the beltline crease meets the fender flairs. That's not a problem until these groups start believing their perspective is the only valid one. That seems to be when responses get posted starting with the words "You moron...."

Regardless, it is what it is. All in all AutoSpies does a good job of hunting down news. That's the best part about this site. That's mainly why I come here.

Intermittently, I have probably been on here longer than most- certainly not all though- and it is my experience that this website goes through cycles. The tone and nature of the messages of the posters vacillates between visceral rants and rational or intellectual discussions. All genres exist at once, but there are periods where one dominates.

As to your appeal to being fair, don't expect too much from the people on here- you will be disappointed. I hate even saying that, but this is a website where the discussion is personal enough that people delude themselves. It is a website where someone can expound rationality and their very next sentence is a "No true Scotsman" fallacy (it happened last week).

You can't change people though, and it is hubris and folly to try. I do not mean to suggest that misinformation should be allowed, but often the only people who absorb the facts, once exposed, are those who are reading and exterior to the discussion.

We all love cars here, some just "hate" more than others.

The trick on this site is to love and appreciate the cars you want...and ignore the ones who want to take those sentiments away from you. Badgewhores, starving for attention, political wingnuts...you name it!...can be found here. At times, their rants can be offensive, ignorant, comical, and on some rare occasions, informative. But the one mitigating reason why this site continues to exist despite what may seem to be a collective of disparate personalities...is that in this country we get to practice freedom of speech. And to some extent that freedom finds new bounds when exercised in anonymity.

We love our own types of cars and hate people who disagree with us.

And most are simply retards who enjoy being a prick on the internet because there are no consequences.

I've been on this website for almost 4 years now... I think. I used to post much more often than now because I simply got tired of all the flame wars. It never ends, and at the end, there won't be a winner or a loser in the argument. Just endless rants...

I love cars and I love news about new cars even more. I really like the wide range of opinions on the boards even if they disagree with me.

As for flaming, you can't get upset or hurt over a few sarcastic or even vengeful words aimed your way. I regularly state opinions that are roundly trounced and de-boosted to the depths of hell and that is fine with me.

I'm mostly glad that this is a free country where I can state my opinion and I enjoy the interaction with other like minded auto lovers.

AutoSpies forever! Flamers and all! (well, except HyundaiSmoke) :)

Funny article. You rant about people flaming eachother for car tastes today, but tomorrow there will be an article "New Lexus LS: BEST CAR EVER?! What do you guys think!?!"

You blatantly try to create flame wars, and then rant about it. Awesome. This site has been going downhill for awhile now.

Obliv, in case you didn't know, Autospies lets the people who post on it create their own articles. This rant is an article a fellow autospier wrote who is fed up with this site and not an agent.

When a fellow AutoSpy criticises a vehicle in particular I can deal with that. Why? because it's about cars. And there is no such thing as a perfect car. There may be a perfect car for Tango's needs, or maybe Joe_Limon's needs or yes, even HyundaiSmoke's needs. But there will never be one that is perfect for all. As long as that truth exists there will be arguments and fussing. What I find distasteful, however is when the political ideology of some people on here gets to piggy back on the site and put forward as automotive news. That's sick and irritating. THAT'S my biggest irritation about this site. I live in a country where one is not particularly free to speak openly about one's political affiliation, not by law, but by culture. America is swiftly turning into that. And I guarantee that as long as the American people dive deeper and deeper into political tribalism is the worse things will get. Once again, I warn the American people. This marks the 3rd time I'm doing that here. As a wise man once said, "He that hath ears to hear, let him hear."

I want to say to everyone who has commented on this article, thanks for not taking any of this personally. I have to just say one thing that I want to make clear that I am not angry with the actions of others but instead with people beginning to care more about divisions in the car world than just cars. Also tango I love your point about political affiliations, I try to keep mine at home too.

But you DO like the idiots who claim that all the Euro lux tops Lexus?

This is what I hate: people who are oblivious to the fact that they are just as bad as the people they criticize.

001, you can monetize your traffic just as well if you move the comments section to the very bottom or hide it by default (see marketwatch.com, they have a decent design). I, and probably others, will be very grateful if we didn't have to scroll through so many mostly-garbage comments to get to the navigation links at the bottom.
Posting fewer flame bait "articles" could help too, and you Agents do that pretty often. Anyway, it's solely up to you to shape your readership if that's important to you.

And yes, this forum is definitely more pillock-ridden than most, yet here I am, happily jumping in the trough with the rest of them. Weird!

Cheers!

^^ Funny, I think the same thing sometimes regarding your last sentence. Is it the "car crash syndrome"? You know it's gonna be ugly but you just gotta look anyway as you pass by. Very rarely do you read good insightful comments that teach you something about a cars features or benefits related to a posted article. I know that yet I read through the crap anyway! Maybe because occasionlly there is some good stuff to read that teaches me something about an industry that I love.
