Grand total: 690,000 Clunkers clunked
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- With the final numbers now in, the Department of Transportation said Wednesday that nearly 700,000 old cars had been traded in for new ones under the Cash for Clunkers program.
"This is one of the best economic news stories we've seen and I'm proud we were able to give consumers a helping hand," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said.
Shoppers had until 8 p.m. ET Monday to buy a car under the Cash for Clunkers program and dealers were given until 8 p.m. Tuesday to file their paperwork on-line to request a government voucher.
Auto dealers submitted total of 690,114 requests for vouchers, according to LaHood. Those requests totaled about $2.9 billion, or just under the $3 billion that had been allocated for the program.

Obama's socialist clunker program hurt used car dealers.

That's all it did.

Agree. At least it helped out the struggling dealers...but one thing sucks though that these dealerships are waiting for their payment.

Cash for Clunker, nothing to do with Obama, just the US version of the Europe program.
How come when most Europe countries do Cash for Clunkers is a good idea and when the US does it is bad?  In Europe engines were not mandated to be destroyed, some vehicles continue to pollute as they found their way to other countries out of Europe or back on the road with falsified documents.  The boost in new car sales was underestimated by all parties involved; the big 3 had to intervene to facilitate a fast reimbursement to dealers as the government was slow on processing dealer paperwork.  Junkyards customers benefited because these used vehicles provided parts in better cosmetic and functional conditions.  Whatever remained is being recycled.

If you want to get the polluting "junk" off the road, here is how to do it. Start having yearly vehicle inspections, if the car runs badly and is "polluting" or unsafe for the road condemn it. I dont agree with giving my money (and yours) to people to buy a new car so they can turn it into another "clunker" 5 years from now.

Now that it has depleted stocked inventory we can move forward and do away with outrageous rebates and high sticker prices that offsets these stupid rebate...and get back to selling an average car price at 17000 dollars.
