STUD OR DUD? Audi's A5 Sportback Sneaks Out Ahead Of Frankfurt
With added power and more style, Audi is giving its new A5 Sportback the ‘S’ treatment ahead of its Frankfurt debut. And this is the first offical picture of the newcomer!

Under the bonnet the new flagship gets the same 3.0-litre supercharged V6 found in the latest S4. And this means power output comes in at 328bhp while torque is rated at 440Nm between 2,900 and 5,300 rpm. As a result 0-62mph takes 5.4seconds, with the top speed limited to 155mph.

Mated to a seven-speed S-tronic dual-clutch ‘box the S5 Sportback also gets quattro permanent all-wheel drive as standard. The flagship Audi gets 19” alloy wheels and sports suspension too, but sport differential costs extra.

Agent 009, you FOOL! You stole my article that I submitted and changed the title so it is incorrect.

FYI: This is the Audi S5 Sportback NOT the Audi A5 Sportback.

Previously, you stole my article about the Audi A6 3.0T vs. BMW 535i MB E350, and Infiniti M35.

When are you going to steal the articles that other Autospies users submit?????

This car looks great, but STOP stealing my articles.

You're not the first person that has happened to GermanNut. Nice car too.

BTW...absolute STUD no matter whose article it originally was. (I'm guessing Audi's)

Okay, so I'm still at a loss of the purpose of the A5/S5 Sportback, where is this slotted against the A4/S4? or is this something like the CLS and E, where it's just a slightly sportier look.

That being said, are there any analysis of the CLS taking sales from the E, or is it causing MB to have better sales overall. I'd be worried the same thing would happen in this case.

The A5/S5 Sportbacks are designed to give Audi customers the best of all worlds. The A5 and S5 Sportbacks combine 3 significant traits found in previously separate Audi models including:

1) The attractive styling of the A5 coupe
2) Nearly the same amount of interior space as the A4 sedan
3) The trunk space/luggage room of the A4 avant

The 3 aformentioned traits are all wrapped into two seductive, efficient, and well-perfoming vehicles: The Audi A5 and S5 Sportbacks

Don't get me wrong, I love the styling of the new A5 Sportback (at least from the picture above), but that being said, what then becomes the point of the A4?

A4 and A5 Sportback are priced differently. Audi expects fewer sportback sales than A4 sales. It's a complementing vehicle rather than a sales volume leader.

But obviously there is similarity and that's why Audi isn't selling it in the states.

If you think the styling of the A5 is lame, then you haven't seen one in the metal. It looks amazing and has a real presence on the road.

The A5 is nice because it's a 2 door, this is just a 4 door... and Audi already has enough of them.

GermanNutGermanNut - 8/28/2009 2:29:46 PM

The point of the A4 is slightly more rear head & legroom when compared to the A5/S5 sportbacks.

If you like the styling of the A5 coupe, but don't want to sacrifice much rear-passenger space like you do in the coupe, and want a large luggage capacity found in the A4 avant model then the A5 Sportback is the car for you!

The S5 is an excellent niche vehicle sure to sell very well on the strengths of its looks, interior space, luggage space, and performance as well as efficiency.

Sportback's styling is nice but i think A5 coupe still looks better. And also sportback looks too much like regular A4. I was expecting little bit more different design than regular A4.

Not as good as I thought it was going to be. I'd rather have a Passatt CC.

I like it. But as with all Audis it will either be underpowered of overpriced (possibly both)

Ya not for nothing i submitted a article a while back and that same day it was on the site with a different title. I figured it was a coincidence but a few people are complaining now, hmm. As for the sportback, i really do love it. Its sexy to say the least. I think i read here that its not coming to America though? Correct me if im wrong. That would be a shame because this thing would sell!

Looks great, but really do not see a big difference from the A4/S4. What makes the CLS/E thing work is that the CLS looks totally different than the E.

Its a nice looking car but what I dont understand is why wasnt this chosen as the A4 this basically just looks like an A4 with more curves, and a bit sportier. The current A4 looks like a bland mix of the last a4, and the current a6. ALso, why is Audi quoting slower times for this car versus the S4, and S5, the interior compared to the CC does really look more expensive in fact the CCs interior appears to be nicer(which isnt a knock against the CC the interior is very nice), and it really doesnt look much like a 4 door coupe like the CLS, or even the CC it just looks like what the A4 should look like in the first place.

this car looks smaller than the 5 series GT (which grew on me finally) but looks dont say anything until i see it in person. I have seen the 5 GT in multiple color combo's and that is what made me start to like it. The black with the dark peanut butter interior is hot. but Audi definitley made a clean cut design than the GT which I expected when I first saw the renderings a few months ago. BMW definitley pushed the envelope on design which they always do. I would have to agree and say the A5 is a Stud along with the 5 series GT.

STUD. We need more 5 door hatches in the US. I blame the Citation.

There is nothing Audi can do wrong at this point, but keep trying to out BMW, BMW. If Audi continue being unique and classy, they will win those over that loves what product they offer. I don't want Audi to be main stream, I like the uniqueness and stand offish feel of the brand. Apple is like that, maybe that is why I gravitate to products like this. I would like it if the Q7 was smaller. Too big for my taste.

My vote, of course, a STUD!

Way more STUD than the 009-beloved-and-much-qualified BMW 5 GT (remember the "seen in right colour" excuse?).

Many forget that this car will not be offered here in the U.S. so the A5Sportback vs. A4 argument is a moot point........

I am an Audi fanboy and apologist. But, I just don't see how this adds sales to Audi's ranks. The look is not so dramatically different from the A4/S4 that it will attract a buyer who would not otherwise buy an A4/S4. The Mercedes E, however, looks like the box the CLS comes in. There, I see two separate and distinct segments.

I would get one, it looks like a great family car. The bigger trunk leaves room for the stroller and baby stuff. I can see sporbacks getting real big, taking over some of the SUV market.

It's a stud in the looks department, all right. But if it doesn't offer any more FRONT-SEAT headroom than the A5 coupe, it's a nonstarter in my book.
