REVIEW: As American As Hot Dogs And Baseball, The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro

REVIEW: As American As Hot Dogs And Baseball, The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro
As far back as I can remember I have always been a gear head. My mind is constantly churning with thoughts and images of automobiles.

To really capture the essence of the obsession, a close friend – who I have had the pleasure of knowing since kindergarten – summoned an old memory. He said that he remembers us on a third grade trip in New York City. While we were passing through the Lincoln Tunnel, I leapt up and pointed to a dark Mercedes-Benz: “That’s a CL600, do you know how rare that is?!” Then I proceeded to inform the chaperone just how expensive and luxurious it was. Yeah, I was that guy.

For me, there has always been a slant towards European automobiles. “Give me the Germans and Italians,” I would always say.

But the
U.S. manufacturers never tickled my fancy. Even with their burbling V8s making a racket, I never looked twice. Eventually as things heated up in auto journalism and I got a chance to get behind the wheel of a handful of vehicles that were as ‘Merican as a hot dog and baseball, the realization was clear: they are not that bad – when they are not half-assed. In fact, I began to like them, faults and all.....

I've seen quite a few Camaros. They look fantastic! Muscular and aggressive yet sleek and sexy

Not as bad as the rims. Their prices will most likely steer any rational buyer away.

The only reason why GM is some what reliable is that they use old technology for years and do not improve on it.

yes... direct injection engines are old technology... but wait, wouldn't that mean the Veyron's efi engine is barbaric?

— veyron1001

you see, veyron is a perfect example of a fool. He really just puts himself out there, and bam, it happens, effortless to show him up for the idiot he is.

Chevy chose Holden’s FE2 suspension for duty in the Camaro, and it proves to be the ideal setup. While it is a bit on the firm side – which allows for BMW-esque handling — it does an excellent job of absorbing any road abnormalities without upsetting the car. Chevy claims a near perfect 50/50 weight distribution when a driver and passenger are accounted for, and has even placed the battery in the trunk to help even things out.
Unlike the stereotypical muscle car, the SS gets off the line without any drama — don’t expect to roast the tires with a simple mash of the gas pedal. Speed comes deceptively fast, almost surprising you when you glance down at the speedometer.

And not only is the Chevy good off the line, it’s fantastic at any speed, thanks to its six-speed automatic transmission. It’s nearly impossible to catch the 6.0L V8 out of breathe. Whether you’re at a standstill or cruising at 60, the Chevy accelerates with the same ferocity and mechanical symphony. Overall, the Camaro is one of the best sports coupes on the market for the price. No other American coupe offers the same experience at this price point. A similarly priced Infiniti G37 might offer a comparable level of refinement, but it’s quite a bit smaller and has 60 less horsepower. With a base price of just under $30,000 – our tester stickered for $31,245 and came with every option except a power sunroof – the Camaro SS is unbeatable for a coupe of this size.

The Camaro's V6 engine puts out a more than adequate 304 horsepower at 6,400rpm and 273 pound-feet of torque at 5,200rpm, while getting an EPA fuel economy of 18 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. We never hit that highway rating, instead averaging 23.6 mpg, not bad considering the available power.

Wow old tech. If we depended on someone like veyron, we would believe his tripe, but than God we can think on our own.

I am so infatuated with this car based on its looks alone. It is the best mix of retro and modern/futuristic I've ever seen. This is one of the best-designed American cars currently. My only gripe is the gimmicky interior. I wish they hadn't went so retro inside.

Direct injection isn't old tech in the sense that it has been in mass production for about 15 years, and if that is the case, the why most cars with better fuel economy use this set up?

The Camaro is a hell of a beast. That car is so well balanced its not even funny. (Test drove a SS at Chevrolet in Scarsdale here in NY)Theres really nothing I can say bad about this car. Yes,the interior is full of the usual plastics found in American cars, but it really isn't anything different from a Mustang or any other American or cheap Japanese car. The car I test drove was a bright red SS. I received plenty of looks and stares. The salesman even let me light up the tires at a red light. I'm about to go check it out again tomorrow and maybe purchase it.
