BMW Poised Again To Unseat Lexus As The Top Luxury Brand In The US?
Though it's only 20 years old this week, Toyota's Lexus luxury brand has grown with shocking speed to become the best seller in the U.S. But thanks to the downturn in the economy, the gap between Lexus and its closest rival, BMW, has narrowed to just a few thousand cars, and BMW may be on pace to overtake the upstart Japanese brand.

As of August, BMW has sold 129,176 vehicles while Lexus has sold 131,469, according to The Detroit News. That's a huge drop from pre-recession figures of over 300,000 cars per year for Lexus, but as the market has shrunk, BMW has picked up share in the luxury segment, and is now ready to take the title Lexus has held for the past 9 years.

"We're really breathing down Lexus' neck," said BMW North America CEO Jim O'Donnell. In fact, BMW was actually slightly ahead of Lexus through June, but the figures swung back in Lexus' favor in July.

009 will do anything to discredit lexus and the obama administration, weve seen this time and time again with his lame posts to draw attention to himself. Regardless of what vehicles lexus makes compared with other luxury makers, it still sells more on a consistent basis than audi mercedes bmw acura infinity cadillac lincoln and buick.

Agent001 Poised again to attempt to discredit Lexus as it is the top luxury brand in America? (in terms of sales)

How many times can this same topic be regurgitated? If they do good for them PERIOD.

BMW better be, with those 1 series.

There's also discussion of -1, or even -3 series. You heard it first!

Personally, I would buy a BMW before a Lexus for all segments but IMHO, I think the forecast (and 009's deep underlying dying wish) is off target. The US preference leans towards Lexus strong points, luxury, comfort, quality as opposed to BMW (performance). Throw in Lexus' ability to leverage off Toyota's much larger production base for chassis, parts, etc. and Lexus will have a price advantage. So in the US, Lexus cars will be more attractive than BMW.

i guess those sorority girls driving is250s should be worried. lol.

and no, a is250 starts cheaper than a 328i and costs cheaper than a 328i after equivalent options are added.

Let me know when Lexus reaches BMW's global sales volume and market pentration not to mention that of Audi and Mercedes-Benz. Then Lexus can claim parity. The US market by itself is nothing.

huu, for each segment, Lexus models do have a pricing advantage over BMW.

There should be an option to ignore articles from certain agents. Agent 009-so predictable. It's amazing how you never post any comparisons where Audi actually loses. We get it, you're biased.

How does one unsubscribe from Audispies?

i find it amusing that all these hyundai vs lexus comparos started appearing out of nowhere. that can't possibly be good for lexus' image when they're being compared to non-luxury car brand. no wonder lexus is a 3rd tier luxury car brand.

i guess that's what you get for rebadging toyotas. hell, when the lexus-badged hybrid yaris comes out, that's going to be really fun!

A. Hyundai has nothing to do with this thread
B. Sales speak louder than you...so Third Tier? Maybe in your book.
C. Stop guessing
D. Hyundai strted the war between Lexus....that's their target with the Genesis. It's a nice car, but its just plain confused.
E. And lastly and most importantly, Lexus still sold more cars the BMW...regardless of the pattern and who may be on the come-up.

Well 009, at least you didn’t make up this crap this time.

The article even contradicts itself. Utter nonsense.

Lexus is once again beating BMW. Lexus is experiencing smaller month to month drops than BMW. They have overtaken BMW year to date, and there is no reason to think this will end any time soon. There is nothing coming down BMW’s pipeline that will stir up sales anymore than what is coming up for Lexus. In fact, with the heightened interest in the HS, a new GX, refreshes to the LS and GS (including rumored hybrid upgrades), Lexus has much more up its sleeve than BMW. The gap looks to widen again.

THE ARTICLE EVEN ADMITS THIS!

try pricing an is250 yourself then. adding options to a 328i and it becomes increasingly more expensive than the equivalent is250, which stars out cheaper as a base model than a base 328i.

at the largest lexus and bmw dealerships in my area, near LA, it's cheaper to lease a is250 than a 328i. longo lexus asks a total of $15633 to lease a is250 for the course of 36 months vs. its closest competitor alexander bmw which asks $16055 to lease a 328i for the same duration (after taking account money down, tax on money down, and monthly payments).

sure you're entitled to your own opinion, but it still doesn't change the reality of things - that lexus is being compared to hyundai in professional sources by reputable reviewers.

lexus loses in both comparos:

do the math. longo lexus' offer on leasing a new is250 is cheaper than the 328i's. $9000 off a 535i? that's probably after taking account a HUGE premium on it from before the discount. without knowing the prices, your guess and my guess are equally good.

that offer's pretty dope if you're the right "qualified" customer. and i'd bet you anything there's a hefty premium. we're talking about a 6-series after all. that's why we should just compare the offers of the two best selling cars from both brands? the lease on the lexus is cheaper period.

if customers didn't care about prices, like you suggested, then lexus wouldn't be planning on selling cheap hatches aimed at younger and poorer audiences. but considering that lexus IS planning on cheap hatches...

the veracruz didn't just beat the rx at only the price. it beat the lexus in handling performance, tranny refinement and... wait, interior design?

"the genesis will compete for customers like lexus es..." if it beat the gs solely because of price, then surely it can't beat the lexus es, right? after all, the lexus es is... cheaper than the hyundai??? a base lexus es starts at $34,470 and a base hyundai genesis 4.6 starts at 37,250, with the same options and ponies. that's just hilarious seeing how your main point is that lexus is a brand for rich people. and yet a competing hyundai is more expensive tells you about the prestige value of the lexus badge.

hyundai genesis winning consumer reports' top-rated upscale sedan over the lexus es350 shows you the overall value of the lexus-badged toyota camry. both not very high apparently.
