Study: 81% looking to buy a new car would consider American vehicles
In a new survey by Consumer Reports, 81 percent of respondents that are looking to buy a new car said that they are likely to consider buying an American vehicle. Only 47 percent said that they would consider Asian while 46 percent said that they would buy European.

However, according to a report by Automotive News, actual U.S. light-vehicle sales differ. Through August 2009, Detroit automakers only accounted for 43.9 percent of new-vehicles sales while Korean and Japanese automakers accounted for 48 percent. European brands accounted for 7.5 percent.

Narrowing it down, the percentage of new-car buyers who said that they are likely to consider buying a Ford model...

They may not be smarter than most people, but they're obviously smarter than you.

I would consider purchasing an American vehicle. But actually purchasing it is slim to none.

Was this survey done exclusively in the South by chance?

America is making some decent cars. The Camaro, the CTS, the SRX, the new Taurus...

I would consider buying those cars.

Count me in too. Camaro, CTS Wagon, Jeep Wrangler (for the beach) would be my Dream Team for the 3 car garage - if I can get it cleaned out! Taurus SHO too, if I had room.

Nice cars... really... Take a look around the comments in this post. Most American cars people are listing are either premium brand vehicles or SUVs/Jeep. I recently was in the market for a NO-Larger than mid-size car... Should I have gone American then? Perhaps... But I was specifically looking for a Wagon. Ford discontinued their Focus Wagon... Chrysler, GM?? My neighbor told me I should go American small SUV. But my new Jetta SportWagen has a HUGE mpg advantage over her Saturn VUE.

Folks the largest "Car" segment is the compact to mid-size market. Sure Ford's new Taurus is all that... GM's new Cadillacs are awesome, Chrysler make a hell of Jeep... But what about a person looking at a Toyota Corolla... Should we steer them to the Cobalt, Focus, Caliber?? These cars are good... but not quite good enough. The quality of a Civic compared to these is much better... Keep in mind that this is a perceived notion by most... before they even show up to the lots. Lets ponder on the thought of GM's last quality compact... Cavalier, Chevette?? Hardly.

Good news is around the corner... Ford & GM have great new cars for these segments coming!! Great, where have they been? To address this post... I considered American but I bought foreign. I'm not proud of this... Like the average auto consumer, I cant afford the new CTS Wagon. I wish my new car was an American car I was excited about, alas, it is not.

I am an optimist... I pray that in the future I make either Bigger bucks to afford the newer Taurus/Camaro/LaCrosse... or that American manufacturers are building compact/mid-size cars to be excited about.

There is a big difference between "considering" and actual "buying". Sales numbers are the final word and all that really matters.

Personally, I am rooting for the domestic industry but let's see them post some real gains on the compeition and then we'll hand out the awards.

I live 1 min drive away from the beach in cali, got a porsche for night and Jeep for beach and hiking trips. Very happy with the Jeep, drive it more than the porsche.

All the cars I would buy are American. And I'm not even American. I think that speaks wonders for how far they have come, or should I say, returned. Once upon a time in Jamaica only the very rich could afford a Buick or a Cadillac and a Lincoln was unattainable. Jamaica's first Prime Minister, Alexander Bustamante drove Cadillacs exclusively. Such was their level of luxury and quality. I think in a matter of time things will improve even further. This is how I would like my garage to look:

Daily Driver: Buick LaCrosse/Chevrolet Malibu/Cadillac CTS
SUV: Buick Enclave
Sunday Toy: Chevrolet Corvette
Motorcycle: Triumph Daytona 675

The Triumph isn't American, but I put it in to highlight my next point. The only American product I would not buy is a motorcycle. American motorcycles suck. I HATE V-twins and that's the only thing that seems to be available from the Americans. Buell makes interesting bikes but the engines are ancient. When Buell gets serious and puts their cylinders in a straight line, add liquid cooling, and lowers their ride height, I would definitely consider one. But for now, not happening.

Have you watched the AMA Pro Series lately ? The Buells are MORE than competitive with the "inline" Japanese bikes. As a matter of fact a Buell won three races in a row this year (forgot rider's name) I love the fact that Buells can compete with "ancient technology" Call me a homer but I am proud to be an American.

My 2007 Civic is great and all, but with three kids and doing a road trip is very difficult. I want a 2011 Ford Rapture when they come out with 6 seats and a crew cab, I am just going to drive less and buy a house closer to my work so I don't have to commute. There is no other truck.

So do you live in Mexico? If not the Raptor is a pointless look at me vehicle like a hummer.

I live in Canada, and I would use it every weekend, have you ever driven off road? 99% of all stock new 4x4s are incapable of going hard off road stock without damaging something, there suspensions bottom out constantly and have to be modified to be capable off road, the F-150 Rapture has been done by Ford, This vehicle is obviously pointless for you so don't worry about it. The Japanese haven't figured out how to make a full size truck yet, The Nissan is getting closer but the Toyota is pathetic, American trucks are the only way to go for me.
