Your Good Friend Tells You He's Buying An Infiniti G37 Tomorrow-How Would You Talk Them Out Of It?
We've all been in this situation before.
You're at the local watering hole, hanging out with your friends and one of them shows up and says- "I just test drove the _______ today and I can't stop thinking about it! I'm going to buy one tomorrow!!!!
In this case we are going to use the Infiniti G37 as our first choice but we'll choose the most popular models out there, over the next few weeks and ask you how to talk people OUT of the purchase.
We're changing the game on you this time.
You probably ALL know how to talk someone INTO buying something, but how good are you at talking someone OUT of making the purchase?
So here we go with round one...
WHAT do you tell your friend that convinces them to change their mind and NOT buy the Infiniti G37 (which is a very nice car by the way)?
What are the key flaws that will sour them on the purchase?
And what do you recommend to them instead and why?
Can't wait to read some of the answers!

I guess we're supposed to say that he shouldn't buy it because it's not a BMW 3-Series? However for some, this is probably a reason TO buy the G37.

Nope. But there must be things about the G that are a turnoff to you.
There are turnoffs to me in EVERY car, no matter what brand or what price.
There is NO perfect vehicle.

If I did, he'd just say that I gotta get over with being a stubborn Lexus fan. I'd say stuff that probably don't qualify anymore such as a stiff clutch, which some people actually prefer for a track day. I personally don't think it looks all that good, if not a little bland. But overall, it's still a good looking, offense-less car, and the interior has inproved considerably since the original G35 although the GPS controls might be a little confusion, in my opinion. (kinda ironic that the EX has the best balanced and most sumptuous interior of all Infinitis)
The exhaust note is cool, but he'd have to watch out when he goes to his girlfriend's parents' house for dinner. You know those parents and the unfortunate prejudice towards anything that makes noise.

If its new, I would tell him/her to buy a used one. Especially the sedan. Not sure of the differece between my previous 07 G35 and the current G37 sedan. But for resale purposes, Its better to buy the sedan used. Prob can find one for around 24k

Transmission problems - lots of discussion on the forums. Went on a test drive with a friend and he complained about the strange transmission. I found the local Infiniti dealer in Albuquerque to be very customer unfriendly. Bought a BMW (5 series do not all have runflats and they have a spare.) instead.

I've driven both the G37 and the 3-Series and the one thing that sticks out in my mind that I would use to encourage a decision away from the G is the overall lack of refinement when compared to the BMW. Judged solely on its own merits, without the influence of the 3-Series the G37 is a phenomenal car, however there are some refinement issues that come into play when the G is pushed towards its redline that makes the engine sound a little course and gritty, and the clutch and gearshift engagement (assuming a manual transmission choice) is not up to par with what BMW offers with the 3-Series.
Now, on the flip side if the G was being compared against the Lexus IS or Acura TL, although the TL is still more refined in the engine compartment, I would strongly support the decision to purchase the G.
Finally, and this is a personal opinion of the beholder is looks. I don't think the G is the best looking of the bunch, I actually think that when compared with the 3-Series, Acura TL, Lexus IS and G, I think the Lexus is the best looking of the cars, but that look alone doesn't sell the car.
Even if unable to talk out of buying a G, I don't think the decision to purchase one is one that would be regretted as the G is a decent car capable of standing on its own.

I would say good decision. Price difference between G37 and 335i here in Middle East is roughly DHS 100K (USD 26K). And Performance wise both cars are pretty close so i can see and have seen some BMW owners going for G37.
Other Alternative here in Middle East is IS300 with 228BHP. It costs the same as G37 but 100BHP short so i am not going to recommend.
C350 is even more expensive than 335i, so not recommended unless MB fan.
I think in this sport luxury category it's hard to beat G37 as an overall car. It's got beautiful design, good engine, nice interior and above all best value(which everybody is looking for nowadays).

I actually have a freind who is on his second G. When he told me he wanted one, I was relived because it is by far the best value in its class. You cant come close in any other car with performance, that price and that tehnology.
The only thing I can complain about is the styling. Not that it looks bad, it tends to burn out very quickly. Other then that, great car, highly reccomend.

Should I buy the G37
Cons:
- Drive train still not as refind as it should be.
- Some think previous model was prettier (I do)
- Infiniti doesn't have the benefit of being a "tier one brand"
- Not the top car at 9/10's driving, ride some time compromised
Pros
- Wonderful, Strong engine.
- One of the best looking cars in its class
- Quality, reliability, and Infiniti’s reputation
- Best bang for your buck in the class
Don't think twice buy the G37!

Not the top car at 9/10's driving.... Well, up to personal driving style. I like the car that rotates, and over 7/10 BMW in fact understeers more and is harder to drift. (I can feel it but cannot understand how BMW dials that steering assist) So, even BMW may be slightly faster in lap time due to better suspension setup(if same horsepower), it's less fun on street.
Tier one brand? People here seem never heard of 1. Ferrari, 2. Aston Martin, 3. Porsche.... and even though I own a 3 I think MB is at higher tier, at least the latter has spupercar, not just many sports sedan and sports SUV.

I hear what you mean about Ferrari,Aston,RR, etc... the seem to be in an "uber class". The automotive press seem to consider BMW and Mercedes tier one world-wide the other brands vary per country. I also believe that Mercedes still has a prestige edge over BMW.

Ummmmmmmmm. Tell him it's ugly? No, that doesn't work it and most of its competitors have turned into psychologically deranged looking art projects.
Tell him it's too expensive? No, that doesn't work because it is actually less than many competitors.

Sigh...........as evidenced by the first posts some people are too politically correct to tell their friends anything other than what they want to hear. How sad many have become.
How to talk a friend out of a G? That would depend on why he likes it and what your motives were. If you've actually tested or at least looked at the other offerings out there than speak your mind. One thing is for sure- this is all entirely subjective based on personal preference. I think a better topic for the article would be- How do you talk your friend out of a bad deal (lease or purchase) on a G37?....

I wouldn't talk him out of it, because it is an amazing machine. I had the pleasure of test driving the G37 and 3 series and I would take the G37 all day long. So I would say go for it, because you will have one of the best looking and performing cars in its class.

I forgot to add to my comments - the G37 has very skinny seats. 200 pounders will wind up sitting on the seatbolsters which stick up and are uncomfortable to sit on.

Audi is just as bad with their seats. I've got to say between Infiniti, BMW, Audi and Mercedes, I think Mercedes has the best seat geometry, with BMW a close 2nd.

I would ask him, Are you prepared to see your exact car pass by you three to four times a day? Of as you walk across a parking lot wonder if "that one" is yours or just a another clone?
If he is happy with a cookie cutter luxury car, then by all means blend in with the crowd.

Yes, Smoke, Q45 sedan of 1997 to 2001 (not to be confused with the QX45 SUV)and the XG350 (my mistake) are very much alike in appearance if you look at the front end and side view
both are more kitchen appliance than automobile...

Luckily I'd never be forced into this scenario, since my friends know enough about cars that they wouldnt even consider one. Nice effort nissan, but you're not going to unseat the Benchmark with this thing. Maybe in 2 or 3 more generations you'll finally figure out something called Refinement, and apply to your cars.
Ive driven every available model of the g line, and I just do NOT see the appeal and would NEVER consider one over the 3. From the moment you fire it up to the moment you hit a bumpy road, it's obvious why it's cheaper than the competition; they cut plenty of corners.

I would say only get it if you're getting the 7spd automatic, because the manual shifter/clutch combo is awful. Also, the ride is a little bit stiff, so test drive it first. Also, the interior is a bit cramped considering the physical size of the car. That probably doesn't bother people that aren't 6'7" though.

This "good friend" must be 6'2" or shorter. Otherwise he wouldn't be able to fit in the car.
I didn't test-drive one because I was too tall to fit in it. However, it's gotten good reviews from the automotive press, so I assume it's a good car. Looks nice, too.
