New US Fuel Efficiency Standards Will Favor German And Asian Brands

New US Fuel Efficiency Standards Will Favor German And Asian Brands
The Obama administration's long-awaited proposed regulation setting fuel efficiency standards at 35.5 miles per gallon by the 2016 model year will be rolled out as early as this week.

But the rules may give some automakers a competitive advantage. The regulation is expected to mirror a California provision that gives less-stringent tailpipe emissions requirements to automakers with annual U.S. sales of no more than 400,000 vehicles, mainly German and Asian manufacturers. Reducing emissions is best achieved by increasing fuel economy.

Despite grumbling from domestic automakers, the provision was part of a deal reached in the spring and will be part of the final regulation, said Jody Freeman, a top White House climate adviser, in an interview last month.

"Maybe the domestics should concentrate on something else besides V8 pick-up trucks"

Come on now - the big 3 were building what people were buying, that is why TOYOTA and NISSAN came out with their V8 Pickups - they wanted in on that lucrative market.

I for one like the loophole. It will continually provide a means for companies to produce the cars I love (powerful, carbon belching, anti green machines). These vehicles will never be main stream since main stream can't afford them. And it forces all the hippies to drive cars they love. It's win win as far as I am concerned.

Whoever deboosted me doesn't like cars and shouldn't be posting on this enthusiasts website. My post was both pro consumer mass produced fuel efficiency and pro performance enthusiast. Would someone please enlighten me?

you're about 8 years late with that...for once we have a government that is moving us into the 21st century, not back to the 19th...
