Big Brother Appoints New Auto Czar To Control Auto Industry Policy

President Barack Obama will announce today that he's tapping his chief auto adviser to try to revitalize the struggling U.S. manufacturing sector.

Ron Bloom will assume the title of senior counselor for manufacturing policy, in addition to his role as senior adviser on the President's Task Force on the Automotive Industry.

Obama said in a statement Sunday that the manufacturing sector expanded in August for the first time in 18 months and had the highest monthly output in two years.

"It's a sign that we're on the right track to economic recovery, but that we still have a long way to go," Obama said.

"That's why I've asked Ron Bloom to help coordinate my administration's manufacturing policy.

Why the backhanded comments? "Big Brother"? For reals? Where were these remarks when our last president was literally imitating BB?

I say this every time this comes up, but I am not a fan of this figurative usage of the word “Czar”. The Russian “Czar” is derived from “Caesar” (“C”- zar, get it?), but in that sense it does not just represent the title of Caesar. Ivan had a fake family tree that made him the descendent of the Caesars; although in his defense he did marry the daughter of the last emperor of the Byzantine Empire. So in its original usage they did not just mean the title Caesar, but also the SURNAME Caesar. Czar is a title of lineage.

Every time I see the above usage, I can’t help but think that it is somewhat akin to coming out and proclaiming yourself the descendent of Jesus.
