Obama's Tire Tariff Backfires As China Considers High Tarriff On US Automobiles

Obama's Tire Tariff Backfires As China Considers High Tarriff On US Automobiles
President Barack Obama's decision to impose heavy tariffs on Chinese-made tires may prompt China to retaliate against U.S. auto and poultry exports.

China took its case to the World Trade Organization Monday, after Obama ordered additional U.S. tariffs on Chinese tires for three years, including 35 percent in the first year. The increases come on top of the current 4 percent tariff.

Besides challenging the tire tariffs before the WTO, the Chinese government said it would investigate on its own to determine whether the United States is improperly selling auto parts and poultry in China at unfairly low prices and with unfair government subsidies -- a process that could trigger Chinese tariffs on these products.

Bro, the Kool-aid is poisoned so you better watch it. Obama did get a jack up economy, true that, but you don't pour gasoline onto a bonfire. Finance 101, can't spend what you don't have. Second, its HIS presidency now. A man is a man and doesn't blame, children do. Adult do what ever it takes to make it right. Play with the big dogs or take your dumb ass home. He can't pretend. He can do this job, But if he can't then he can not continue to say, I tried it but it's all George's fault.

A number of things are going to hit us very soon. Despite Obama making a promise of the unemployment rate not going beyond 9%, inflation is just around the corner. That will stagnant the tiny growth going on right now. Our loan buddy China doesn't want to play with us any more because they feel we can't pay back future loans. We want to not repair but create a completely new healthcare cluster screw and can't even get back the money given to the auto companies by some stupid mistake that was made recently by some oversight. Besides, where will the TRILLIONS of dollars come from to finance the biggest public screwing of the American public in history? And last, banks are still going under along with businesses that aren't coming back. Who is going to pay the IRS all the money needed to run the U.S. with massive job losses. 1/3 of this countries revenue is gone. Period. So, please get a reality check and stop playing pretending like all is okie dokie.

Today's Europeans were not originally from Europe either. They migrated from Africa, so then by your twisted logic, they have as much rights to being in Europe and any other immigrant. By your logic, the only people that have rights to any land are Africans in Africa, since the first modern humans were in Africa and people migrated to all other parts of the world.

"an IQ test? that's how you messure the intellect of a president?"

An I.Q. (Intelligence Quotient) test is a good general indication of intelligence in a qualitative sense. A few I.Q. points is essentially minutia, however if you compare almost any politician (or almost anyone for that matter) to someone like Marilyn Vos Savant or Christopher Langan, then there is no comparison.

If you don't believe me on the Nixon I.Q. number you don't have to take my word for it you can look it up. The truth is a far more interesting thing than someone's preconceptions. Obama is smart and educated and fairly erudite, but for me to use the word "intelligent" you have to be quite a bit more than just smart- you have to be a genius. Obama is far from being one.

As far as your analysis (if that is what you can call it) of Hoover: I would recommend that you get your economics from economists and not civics professors. Hoover was hardly a free-marketer and ran budget deficits that were about 4% of GDP.

I don't know if you are familiar with this but the Keynesian (I would like to point out that Keynes wasn't a Kenynesian in the end BTW) idea of government deficits is fundamentally an argument derived from the desire for full employment. Hoover did run deficits, but the unemployment of which you speak was the result of something else Hoover supported: wage freezes. Which I would hope you recognize as problematic when economies start to collapse. The following article is about scholarly research that appeared in the Journal of Economic Theory:

http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2009-08/uoc--hps081909.php

I would hope that the above comment about "Republicans" does not include me. I am not a Republican, and I do not agree with them on a fair number of things (gay marriage for example), just like I don't agree with the Democrats on a fair number of things.

"the indians blended with the land..."

That is a cute thing to think, but there is a fair amount of evidence that is really just isn't true. The Native Americans learned to manipulate the land, particularly south of the equator. This change in human perceptions of nature was the impetus for the agricultural revolution. It wasn't limited to the south, many North American tribes actually intentionally set fire to the landscape.

Obama has done an absolutely stand up job in the past 8 months giving the mess he inherited from W .
In the case of the Tire standoff, Obama has made a correct move to ensure that the market is given space and protection to absorb the reality of a large scale import of Chinese Tires. China itself does that for a range of products that its deems as affecting crucial industries. Look no further then their attempt to brow beat Rio Tinto and the Australian Govt into locking in an extra 30% discount for Iron Ore.
While China is an important partner in the Global economy for the US, they are still a command economy that is primarily setup to ensure the survival of the Communist Party . This dichotomy is what needs to be negotiated carefully by the US and EU.
Their moves in Asia be it Aksai Chin, repression in Tibet and Xinjiang or strategic threats towards Taiwan are but a harbringer to their ambitions at Empire. Yet this has to be balanced with the view that China is also changing rapidly and the growing market is already by some accounts out of control of state planners .
The optimistic view is that rising incomes and education levels will result in a China that is far less adventurous and far more ingrained in the global fabric to seek to distort it.

Not to get into the debate of whether Obama is good or bad - people will cast that vote next time around.......

But this tariff by itself is not that big a deal. While I think it is a step in the right direction it is just a shot across their bow - a pinch in the cheek if you will.

If we really wanted to balance the scales, we would be going far beyond tires to every other auto part, every other electronic device we play with, toys, clothes, tools, appliances, building materials,.........virtually every thing we buy at WalMart, Sears, Home Depot, Staples, PetSmart, Best Buy and the like.

Putting a tariff on just the tires is frankly just "boob bait for the bubbas". It really does not accomplish much more than placate the unions, shoring up the administration's battered image a bit in their eyes. It was an inexpensive way to give some political payback to an interest group feeling the pinch, to keep them in line.

Will it mean more tires made in America? No. We will still get most of them from Thailand, Malaysia, Romania, Venezuela, Vietnam, Korea, and the Czech Republic.

Ugh, I mis-typed the whole first sentence in my response above. Should have read; "Sad but true inspiron7"

Someone at Autospies please add editing capabilities to this forum. Us impulse responders could really use it.

One great thing about a Democracy and free speech. You have every right to speak up...and demonstrate how ignorant, uneducated, and racist you really are...and you can go home and throw darts at the black man hanging in your basement with your kids.

And no one will arrest you...isn't America great.

And when your side is losing the intellectual debate of content and ideas you can cowardly cry racism to mask the fact.

Exactly, 1995e34, the rest of the industrialized world scratches their heads and wonders why it is not universal in the USA.

1995e34 the problem is many are giving suggestion about what to do about healthcare but just because someone says jump out the window, the only suggestion, doesn't mean do it. I've seen other suggestions but the Dems refuse to floor them, like they have an agenda and don't want anything but their plan. People are not ignorant today and know they are being handed a crazy scheme.

No one questions the need for healthcare, but when you call people that don't agree with YOUR method to solve it "un-american" or whatever else, something is wrong and we need to call them out. We are willing to change and fix the system, not turn it over to a government that just gave AIG and BofA the ability to give billions of our money in bonuses without calling them out. Dude, you are smarter than that. If you can question the last administrations intentions, why not this one.

Don't let the color of this President stop you from solid reasoning. I've always want a black President, but not at the expense that it overlooks the values of its people. Something it terribly wrong and many are seeing it in the polls. We should have check this guy out before this, now its too late.

"why try and get cute when the rest of the developed world has done the trials for us? we have hundreds of successful templates to copy."

And virtually ALL OF THEM have proven to us that they dont work, cost more then they ever thought, and it becomes the dominant political issue for those nations. Then there is the rationing and the problems. You put government in control of your health care, they are in control of YOU. I am shocked that liberals dont see that considering they are so geeked about government intrusion of the Patriot Act. Give them the reigns of your health and well being, your conversations and emails getting looked at by Dick Cheney will be like wallpaper in the nursery.

This may be the most quintessential example of "thread drift". It's all good. People need to vent sometimes.

Not sure where Socialist Health Care and the need for the losers in society to get free bread and circus from the producers came from. Seems to be a sore subject with the Oboamaphiles lately.

Oh well. Life is tough. Get used to it, not about to change any day soon.

who cares about the tariffs, does anyone here buy chinese tires? If you do pity. If you don't what's it matter? Ok, so maybe he might tariff other chinese products. Does anyone buy things that are made from China? Like what? Unless were really retarded the only reason he did this is because of the unfair prices. You can't just expect to come and sell your tires here for super cheap because you made it that way. That's like getting you Nike Air Max's for 25 bucks. They're made in china. Lots of components in each one of our computers are made in china. There's a big difference in being made in china, and being sold by china. That's what the tariff is for. The cheap knock offs that everyone talks about, really aren't so much of a knock off when you think about it. Why? Because the original thing they are copying, came from china.

HyundaiSmoke:

You are a loser, thank you for the entertainment. To say that Asians are disadvantaged or taken advantaged of in America is a joke. They arguably the most successful single race in America today. Look at any of the US Census Per Capita income demographic studies and you will see the Asian Population as the highest earners, followed by White, Hispanic, Black. Look at any of the Tier-1 Universities in America, it will be almost impossible to bump into an Asian.

Disadvantaged? Go Spew your $hit somewhere else, any Asian should be embarrassed by your comments.

Oh and your comment about the Police, riiiiighttt because Asians are so profiled and assumed to be criminals, give me a break! The only time I see a cop breaking an Asians balls is if they drive those illegal rice-rockets 95mph down the freeway and good for them.
This isn't France.

P.S. Oh yeah, Asians,as a percentage of the population, are minority populous in the US CJ system, but of course if they were so mis-treated by the police, this would be so.

You said :"Are you game, are you ready to team up with your Native Canadian Brothers up there? Im quite sure American Asians will be smart enough to be on my team."

American Asians are smart enough to take advantage of the opportunities afforded to them in America, which they have and hopefully will continue to do so in the future. There is no reason to dissent because they are NOT being taken advantage of, presumably like you said in Canada and France, but are rewarded for their hard-work and value minded family structure.

That is why America is so great! Now go have fun with your 1/2 @ssed health-care system and idiotic tax rate, we don't want any part of it.
