Saab Releases Official Specs On The 2010 9-5: Does Have What It Takes To Compete With The Competition
Excuse me for being excited, but it’s been a while. And by a while, I mean 12 years. And by “it” I mean the introduction of a new 9-5. We’ve heard a lot about the car that is to save Saab (if anything will) here on CarThrottle, but Saab has finally put out it’s official set of press releases for the new 9-5 and now we’ve got all the little details to share with you. On paper at least it looks extremely promising in a lot of regards, but the proof’s in the pudding… or at least behind the wheel. Still, get ‘em while they’re hot: new Saab 9-5 specifications!
As you probably know, the new 9-5 sits on the Epsilon II chassis shared with the Opel Insignia. As expected, it shares a few things in common – but if you’ve been reading up about the Insignia, you’ll know that’s a good thing. Initially the 9-5 will be available with a range of 3 gas and one diesel engines of outputs ranging from 160bhp-300bhp, all with their own benefits and charms. There’s an emphasis on efficient power, so all engines are turbocharged and all the gearboxes – automatic or manual – have 6 ratios, which is a nice upgrade. All the gas engines have laser-finished cylinder bores, as well as piston oil squirters and sodium-filled exhaust valves for heat dispersion.

We can all thank GM for that if it does happen by boycotting their shit.

From the front I like it, but the side & rear profile are bad.

The side and rear profile are the best and most unique styling elements on this car. Such narrow minded resistance to anything that deviates from the norm are why the hyper bland Camry and Accord are consistently amongst the top selling vehicles.

Seems like an ok car, but it doesn't appeal to me.

the front is nice, but the rear is "different." might be too modern/concept car for mass production

it has the weird GT-R roof, which i dont think anyone likes. Pretty awkward back end.

I'm not at all surprised a couple of "Lexus sheeple find the roof and rear end too "different" for their tastes. Saab should be applauded for their efforts to produce a distinctive vehicle, rather than simply appeal to the lowest common denominator ("LexusKindaGuy", "lexusrox").

The design language is phenomenal and clearly SAAB. They basically updated the lines of the old 9-5 and merged them with classic moments from previous generation models in a new and sophisticated package. Kudos to SAAB for their forward thinking! (In a similar fashion Jaguar messed up the new XJ design language because it doesn't relate to its heritage or traditions at all and just tries too hard to be different.)

Same old Saab story.

The nose of this car disturbs me. There is too much metal between the headlamps and the grille. And the chrome is garish. The other design elements are clearly retro, harking back to the original 900 and perhaps even the 99. These are good things. But the attempt to round off the sides doesn't work so well, I think. More character lines are needed there. The interior works fairly well, I think. As for the engines. I just don't get it. 2.8L turbo V6 with 300hp? Come on. The 2.0 turbo I4 could get that with ease. A 2.8L turbo V6 should be putting out at least 30 to 50 hp more. Especially with not one, but two "snails" in the downpipes. That said, the turbo I4 needs to be pumping out at least 250hp to be relevant. They have a far way to go, but for the first time in years I can say without a gut-wrenching feeling that there is hope. Maybe.

I like this car, even the back end. Its modern yet still keeps the "essence" of previous Saab models.

I like it, however the profile and rear kinda remind me of the hyundai azera and the interior reminds me of a volvo (not a bad thing, the interior that is)
