Volkswagen Promises More US Specific Models Coming Our Way

Looking out from a balcony above the Volkswagen pavilion at the Frankfurt auto show, Klaus Bischoff, chief designer for the VW brand, surveyed his creations.

Mr. Bischoff, who has helped define VW’s design language, from the smiley face on the electric concept E-Up to the swoopy lines of the Passat CC to the stubby, uncluttered body of the new Golf, was dressed in a conservative suit. He spoke about his affection for America. “Designing cars specifically for the American market will pay off for Volkswagen,” he said. “At the moment, not one of those is being built. Our cars now are built for European roads. In the moment, we struggle. But wait.

Is that a promise or a threat?

Who is he fooling? Does he think we all are idiots here in America? We know by that comment "Made FOR America" that you want to dumb down your cars imported to us. We won't stand for the soft suspension and cheap materials and components. Why won't you just give us the European versions? They have a more sporty setup, gets great gas mileage and low-end torque. The interior is made of high quality material. If you are just going to send cheaply made cars to us, and then wanting to charge us a "German" premium, you can forget about it. We're not suckers.

Volkswagen is now trying to become the German Toyota. I predict that within 12 months of this new model going on sale VW will announce its entry into NASCAR. It will then try to sign a deal with either Ford or Toyota (it has had partnerships with both in Europe) or with Chrysler for a re-badged full-sized truck, bearing its name and grille. Then within 5 years of all these Americanising things, it will announce that it is in the red and may have to close the TN plant. Volkswagen's current attempt to be more "American" is a collosal failure. In case somebody wasn't paying attention (quite understandable, really) that effort (or lack thereof) is the Routan.

Americans have been waiting 50 years for a decent VW. So we're supposed to wait some more? LOL
