Ugly Duckling? Nude Lexus LF-A Caught Revealing More Cellulite And Bumps Than A Starlet Past Her Prime

Ugly Duckling? Nude Lexus LF-A Caught Revealing More Cellulite And Bumps Than A Starlet Past Her Prime
OK, I can officially say I tried to like it, yes I really tried to like the upcoming LF-A (LF-L?).  I was optimistic at first and the early designs on the show car circuit were clean and elegant.

It looked like Lexus finally shattered the Japanese boy racer stigma burned into my brain first by the original GT-R and then followed pathetically by the current GT-R.

Then I saw these shots of what probably is the final design of the halocar from Lexus.  With the cammo off the final design is every bit as tacky as the GT-R. The mismatch of design queues and a decidedly tacked on look of the components leave this car looking like a high schooler designed it in his garage using the JC Witney catalog. In a word "amateurish".

Now let me be the first to tell the GT-R and I bet even the LF-A can indeed walk with the big boys.  Performance is not the issue at hand.  But when you design what is to be a pivotal icon for a marque I would like to think that it would look better than this.

If you want a look at how to do it right then look no further Ferrari's 458 Italia.  Notice in the gallery how smooth and clean the design is.  The is not one inconsistent line on the car and every component is well integrated into the final design.  Compare the rear end of both cars and you see what I mean.  No big tacky vents covered with unsightly mesh grills.  The design is integrated and superb on the Ferrari, the LF-A on the other hand is a mishmash of looks with no elegance. Maybe it looked good in 2003, but after 6 years of maternal gestation the whole thing just looks dated and no longer relevant.

I can go on with the comparisons but this might be better left to you to decide.  Is this what you would expect from a super car sporting a $450,000+ price tag?

The headlights are horrible. Why in the HELL did they change those on the concept? The whole look of the car was in those headlights!!! Who EVER made that decision needs to be fired on the spot, cause it killed this car.

The car is still obviously camo'd around the headlights and taillights. You might want to hold off your judgement until it's actually released.

This Lexus is obviously covered head to toe in cladding. They wouldn't dream of releasing a car with such coarse and discordant lines. It just can't be that nasty and distasteful.

The Ferrari however, is a stone-cold MASTERPIECE.

This is a more useful link since we have seen this car in this form a million times over. The above link is mostly unveiled, basically completely unveiled actually production "White" LFA. The car is a bit busy but I like the overall look it looks like nothing else, and I like the fact Lexus didnt use someone elses styling(as many supercars are starting to look generic), or go retro to create a supercar. Like the GTR it is not mistaken for anything else on the road. And honestly if lamborghini can charge what a million plus dollars for a star wars battle cruiser edition Murcielago, Im confused as to how this cars styling is any worse. $450,000 is way to high though its above its would be GT competiors and alot of supercars.

The lambo was a nice consistant design I agree with 009 on this one the Toyota just looks like they borrowed designers from 8 different companies to put together their car.

Generic supercar... you can only be talking about the Audi R8. What other supercars look anything like any other supercar? Aston One -77 and the Ferrari 599 are the closest I can think of and they look very different and not generic at all. Must be the Zonda that you are talking about it looks just like a Focus to you?

Also why are people still talking about this thing it is a show car it will never make production and it still has not proved to be reliable. Toyota needs to stick to what it knows boring ass sedans and "environmentally friendly" hypbrids. Leave anything going faster than 100 mph to people who know what they are doing.

No the R8 is far generic the one Audi that has truely unforgettable styling, I was referring to the many upstart company supercars that just look like versions of established brands cars. And the new Mclaren which no matter how good it looks, looks like a meshing of several past and present supercars.

The fact of the matter is, that at the price of a reasonable house (in most not-ridiculous priced areas), this car is targeted at a very select and limited market: people who can and would buy a Lexus "super"-car. Obviously they are not targeting people who want clean style or super performance; there are [much] better options already available for both of those. I can only surmise that the design is meant to appeal to people in that small (tiny?) group who would buy the car, and if it's a resounding sales success, then they did a good job.

The car looks fat for two reasons, if any body here actualy took time to look at the pictures they would see it!

The rims are to small (much smaller than the other LF-A proto's) and those front fenders are not real, you can see the overlap with the real one's.

this is the same car as the white one without the rear wing popped up. We see the front fascia will most likely change as with the front fenders. the front and rear taillights are covered with tape, and those definitely aren't the production wheels. Instead of rushing a car into production and being an evolution of another car, namely the mclaren and ferrari 458 respectively they have taken their time with this car and are going to make it right. Losers here say it's ugly but praise that stupid as hell looking new 458. The headlights on that thing look so screwed up. Then the greenhouse is so slim in the rear its like a prototype LeMans racer. 550hp? Who says that's all it will produce? How much HP did the GTR produce? 485? But yet 0-60 in 3.3 secs. Usable power is the key, not boatloads of it that smoke the tires like the dumb ass shelby mustangs. This thing will have at least 60 more HP than the GTR and weigh more than 500 pounds less. Do you expect it to be slower just because it isn't 4WD? Get real here people, put your hater caps to the side for a minute and think about what this car will be capable of. A CARBON COMPOSITE TUB! Super Rigid construction with aluminum body panels? Yeah I can't wait for a test of this thing.

I think the headlights are not going to be on the production vehicle like that. It looks like it's still covered in camo. If you look at it closely...it still looks like the headlights are glued to the fenders, still. I think the production will look a hundred times better than this. Especially, in a different color other than the camo'ed matte black.

I just can't see this car costing $450k, maybe $150k - $200k, but even $200k is too much for it. It has just a very very hard list of cars to compete with, and this is Lexus's FIRST attempt at a super car. Take the IS-F, in my opinion I think it failed. Lexus needs to make this car as SEXY as they can (just like the concept), then make it perform as INCREDIBLE as it can so it can compete with Ferrari, Lambo, Porsche, SLR, Aston Martin, etc... if it can do these two things then $200k should be its max. I can see the LF-A competing with the Aston Martin only, I just don't see it getting close to a Lambo, SLR, and DEFINITELY not at Ferrari.

So, make it sexy, and just nasty performer, and keep your price to below $200k and it will be a winner, other than that, mark it a failure already and just cancel it.

It will compete with all of them. That's what this car is design to do. It will definitely compete with Ferrari, I think. I've driven both Ferrari F430 and Lambo Murcielago, Gallardo. In my opinion, it competes more with the Lambo's because Lexus will not strip this car down to the bare bones and have it just a track/sportlike car. The F430 drives very nice but, lacks luxury amenities, i.e. navigation, automatic headlights and so on. These days, in order for a company to market a car with 200k+, in my opinion, it has to have a very exotic look, low to the ground, 2 doors, V8-V12, has 480+ HP and voila!!

Frankly, its not so bad. It pretty much looks like the concept model and frankly, when you have that much power, you can't but help having all the gaping holes in the bodywork. By contrast, the 458, which is hailed as a return to good looking Ferraris, has one of the ugliest front ends I have seen in a LOOONG time.

wait till next month, when we actually see the production model. I don't think there is any lexus that is particularly not appealing. Except for the grille on their hybrid models. But the regular GS IS and LS look fine to me. I bet they add a grille to the front with the lexus badge. They will have alcantara leather inside and all the lexus luxury? you bet your ass this thing will be comfortable, and the performance will never fall off from the race car which is said to do sub 7:15 lap times at the Ring. Watch some of the videos. The race car is said to weigh the same as the road car will. And I bet the road car will come with more HP than we think. Sorta how the GTR was a little bit more powerful than it was advertised.
