Does Acura's ZDX Really Stand A Chance Against BMW's X6?

Does Acura's ZDX Really Stand A Chance Against BMW's X6?
Automakers say they are hearing this message from some important (well-heeled) shoppers: Give us the SUV's high seating position with such a nice view and handy cargo space and the foul-weather and bad-road capability that comes with all-wheel drive and ample ground clearance. But change the look, either to the mainstream appeal of a tailored sedan or the excitement of a sports coupe.

Replies so far include Toyota's Venza in the mainstream category and BMW's X6 in the coupe genre.

Come December, Honda's Acura luxury brand joins the fray with the 2010 ZDX.

Looking forward to our ride and drive for the ZDX. Should be a decent enough driver, but the question from me is......why this product, and why right now??

Everyone and mean EVERYONE needs a school bus type of SUV and the automakers should know this. They should make all SUVs for carrying a soccer team whether or not every SUV shopper has a soccer team to drive around. I am sick of these companies satisfying niche markets when they ought to just sit back and make the same thing over and over over again for years on end. There are only a Billion car buyers on earth, why should we have more than 20 models? Just because people want them and the automakers have the greatest design and manufacturing capability that has ever existed? We should have a grumpy grumble fest until they stop creating new stuff.

According to MotorTrend, a junior female designer in her 20's came up with this design.

The will both survive but I doubt anybody would be cross shopping these vehicles. Saddly they will be cross-shopped with X5's and MDX's so the manufactureres are just wasting their time and energy on designing stuff that is not needed.

Do they even compete? The X6 is north of 60k the ZDX will probably be around 40k

Looks more like a Lincoln MKX competitor to me.

Acura died when the Legend did.

X6 is getting very popular here in Middle East, especially because of it's unusual design, but it's out of the range of many interested and some who can afford think it's over-priced. ZDX might be the answer. Honda can rebadge it Honda _RV something for middle East.

I'll reserve judgements on this car till I see it in person. I am a big fan of the X6, it looks like a massive toy car. It's fun, functional and fast. What's not to like about it?

The fact that its " new " or " innovative ". Those are the same people who sat less than 5 minutes inside a BMW and then complain about how the iDrive is so difficult!

- No. Except to maybe disillusioned Acura fans.

Yes, only if it is way cheaper. I dont like how the lines that run vertically make it looked pieced together. I love the way the X6 drives, especially the X6M! The japanese weird spaceship design is definitely not growing on me, they need to be sharper lines and less round corners.

X6 is trying to go Range Rover (Sport) territory and ZDX...not sure. I like the x6, x5, and MDX...but this thing is just a mish-mash.

I see empty-nesters buying it...functional enough yet youthfully sporty.

Base X6 looks cheesy, but throw on sport pack, running boards and some black rims...now you're talking.

If ZDX (name kinda sucks) has an impressive option list, it should do well if priced accordingly

No, Acura sucks rotten eggs !!
What a ruined brand - stupid designs.

Never buy an Acura. I own 08-MDX and build quality and dealer service sucks.

i'll reserve final judgment until i see one on the road. but from the photo, it's not bad looking at all.

with all the 'fastback' designs now on 4-dr sedans and SUVs, this is the FASTEST looking fastback yet. at the same time, to not sacrifice cargo volume, the rear remains relatively high. is that a see-thru panel on the back, ala the original CRX?

nope. although, i think they both are ugly vehicles. the bimmer will out perform the acura any and every day but it's still ugly.

in profile the X6 is definitely ugly and ill proportioned.

this acura is NOT ugly at all; in this photo it actually looks somewhat sleek, altho' slightly 'heavy' in the rear. it may look a little heavier in a low angle photo, and in real life, it MAY
be a bit too large for the 'sporty coupe' the design otherwise suggests.

I love how people can conclude a car is crap (or great) before it even arrives on dealer lots and you can see/drive it in person. What are we basing our "professional" opinions on? A 2D picture?

It got favorable first-drive reviews already from a few mags and blogs. I'll wait to pass judgment until

a) I see it in something other than silver (ugly color for this car its black glass roof)

b) I can drive it.

I would rather have the refreshed 2010 Acura MDX over the ZDX and I would rather have the refreshed 2010 BMW X5 over the X6.

People can conclude based on Acura's previous body of work. Only a retard would think that this thing would outperform an X6. Acura isn't even claiming that. But that doesn't stop the fanboys.

As for looks? If it looks bad in pictures its going to look weird in real life. Acura can keep this monstrosity.

Does the ZDX stand a chance against a vehicle that sold 344 units last month? hmmm good question.
