What's HOTTER And Which Would You Rather Have? Audi R8 or New Mercedes SLS?

What's HOTTER And Which Would You Rather Have? Audi R8 or New Mercedes SLS?
At the Frankfurt Motor Show I got my first look at the new Mercedes SLS in the flesh and got to appreciate again the timelessness of the Audi R8.

So it got me thinking, if someone offered me the keys to both cars and I could only choose one, which would I drive off in?

What would be YOUR choice?

Audi R8 or Mercedes SLS?

And be sure to tell us WHY you chose one or the other.

We asked what you would pick and WHY. WHY R8 over SLS for you?

Whoops. Its a standout in terms of looks and performance (theres gonna be a clubsport!!). It's got the engine in the middle, and the front wheels never get more than 30% so most of the time, its a RWD.

R8 (V8 or preferably V10).

I am partial to Audi, though I do like Benz a lot. I am not a big fan of the SLS design, especially after all the waiting and hype. I do however like the R8's styling, LED headlights, interior, awd, and most importantly the superb engines.

If it were an Sl65 AMG BS...then It'd be a different story.

R8 because it looks better (in my opinion).

R8 No Doubt.......performance wise I think the SLS can outperform the R8 but that still needs to be tested. but as for looks the R8 comes out on top. The SLS did not come out the way i expected but the AMG crew did a hell of a job with the performance of that car(AS ALWAYS).

I think R8's design is much better and it's mid-rear engined.

"someone offered me the keys to both cars" than i would take SLS.
If my money than would go for R8.

I don't like the SLS, but I would take the keys (assuming it's for free) and then sell it immediately and buy the R8 V10 or something better.

I love the R8 but give me the SLS!

Neither because neither is worth the money they want you to pay for it. I'm not the supporter of conspicuous consumption and rich pretenders.

maybe you should drive one before you say whether or not its worth the money.

R8, the SLS looks like an old man car... fail on benz's design team.

I'd take either vehicle. Then as soon as they "gave me the keys" I'd sell it and use the money as a down payment on a Ferrari F458, which would crush both vehicles in basically every way.

My vote is for the SLS. With that being said, the R8 has the advantage of having the option of a true manual transmission.

With that being said, the SLS is an awesome car, I would get dark gray with red leather interior.

The SLS is gorgeous, but I would take the R8 hands down if only because I could get it with a traditional manual. Sports cars and automatics don't mix in my book.

If I couldn't sell it, then I'd take the R8 for sure. The SLS is hideous.

Also, as good as the AMG 6.3 is, it is a bit disappointing that they didn't bring a new engine for their flagship. But then again, I guess their middle name is not "Motor". ;-)

What kind of a lame ass comment is that? The 6.3 V8 is a fine engine and perfectly modifiable for a car like the SLS.

You want them to develop a new engine? Fine. Let them. That means higher R&D costs which will find their way into the price tag of this car - and you're probably one of those guys that likes to complain about how "overpriced" the car is when that happens.

Shoe-horning Audi/VW into someone else's story again, way to go AutoSpies, that's the grocery-bill covered for this month - vorsprung durk propaganda!

SLS - it's not this century's NSX, it's not a user-friendly Ferrari, it's not the best thing since the 911, or the 'sensible' Lambo - it is what it is, 100% Mercedes/AMG.

I would think the young guys would go for the R8 and the older guys who remember the original Gullwing would go for the SLS. I can see the appeal for both cars. Myself I like the R8 for it's mid engine and connection to the Gallardo and it's manual tranny. The SLS for it's classic styling and connection to the original Gullwing. Negatives on both-SLS-no manual transmission.R8-Awkward panel slab both C pillar.I've never been able to come to grips with that styling touch. Which over the other I'd have to drive them both to make a decision.

I would take the R8 hands down.

After seeing the SLS in person in Frankfurt, I was left with the impression that it is a miss, design wise for Mercedes and as one reader said, an old man car.

Not that I think it's awful, it's nice, just not beautiful enough to lust for and buy.

Too many other cars out there that are better looking (the R8 being one of them) and I think Mercedes will find it a tough sell in today's marketplace.

The R8 however, gets better looking to me with age and I don't think its design will ever go out of style.

I think it will become a cult classic.

The other thing about the SLS that hit me was...I CAN'T tell until tomorrow's top story because it will be the topic.

So be sure to check later tonight when it goes live.

I would rather own the SLS it just seems like a more special car, and its interior I think is alot better than the R8's. Im the R8 would be the better drive though. So the R8 if I was buying and was going to drive it on the regular. THe SLS if it was free and I had the choice between the 2.

I have to ask this: What's up with the stupid comments here?

SLS is an old man's car? And the R8 isn't? Give me a friggin break. Older people usually have the cash to buy these cars and that doesn't make these cars cars for old men. Oh yeah, you think only young people buy R8's? Hilarious. You see a young guy on the street with an R8 and immediately you generalize: R8 = young man's car. What f_cking bullshit. Go contact Audi and ask them who buys R8. I'm almost positive the age range will be from the mid 30s to 50s.

There's a reason I stopped visiting Autolies on a regular basis...

PS: This topic is pure fail. Flame wars are started by the agents here with silly little topics like this.

The R8 is a car young people lust over, young people don't want an SLS because it is very conservative and doesn't look like a supercar, hence only people with "matured" tastes will even consider buying it. I have a slight feeling that you really did understand what was said, you are just trying to be the person enticing the flame war, and then blame it on the people who run the site.

You got to be kidding right? why is this question even been ask in the first place. Easy answer the Audi R8, and I did not have to even think about it.

Why? It pretty, sexier, and just has the V10 option to back it up. Plus how often you see an Audi R8 around your neighborhood or city? unless you live in Orange County like me than you see a couple a week ; )

I'm 47 but I've got little desire to sate my small appetite for nostalgia with neo- classical cars. I like the looks of the Camaro, Challenger, and, to a lesser degree, the SLS, but when it comes to preference for design, I'm forward-thinking. There's no question in my mind that the R8 will be a future classic. I became enamored of Audis in the early 80s because of the ur-Quattro because there was nothing else like it and hasn't been since. But as much as I wish for a successor, I shudder to think of them tacking on some ur-Q styling elements to the S5 and I'd be mortified if they tried to create a modern interpretation of a thoroughly 80s car. The R8 to me is the spiritual succesor to the ur-Q (with a much greater potentiality for timelessness) and thus renders any direct attempt to recapture the glory of the past as a ephemeral and embarrasingly pointless exercise in unoriginal design--like the Thunderbird and the SLS.

I am Mercedes Benz fan...but I would take the R8....or current SL65 over this SLS any day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azU1q-fkdns&NR=1 this link at the end of the video will show you (in numbers) that the SLR is almost the best sport car...so I am sure that the SLS will outperforme the R8, But still I'll pick up the R8...vintage designs are not for me.

Hands down the r8 either one. the sls is just so ugly and in my opinion the doors on the sls have to go just another gimmick to make the car more expensive

Both look stylish...I'll take both. I'll use the Mercedes for A-list events and the R8 to burn out those Rice Rockets.
