Will The Next Generation Mercedes SL Be A Convertible SLS? And If So, Should It Be?

Will The Next Generation Mercedes SL Be A Convertible SLS? And If So, Should It Be?
As I kept circling around the new Mercedes SLS at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, I started to think will they make a convertible version of it and call it the next generation SL?

After all, these guys all like to take a high end car design and filter the look, down to other models over time.

So my question today is- Will they make a convertible version of the SLS and call it the next SL?

The name 'SLS' DOES suggest it in an indirect way, doesn't it?

And if that is the case, are they making the right move?

Or should the next SL be a completely different design (inside and out) than the SLS?

The reason I'm posing the question is because I'm not entirely sold on the look of the SLS and our readers seem polarized in their opinions of it as well.

What say you?

Look how closely this SL resembles the SLR...No reason to think the same can't happen with the SLS

Theres no point in defending this article. I think deep down inside you know this was pointless. It will never happen, they are two different cars aimed at different crowds.

Neither of you jerks actually read what 001 was trying to say. He wasn't saying that the next SL will literally be a convertible SLS, he was talking about styling. Like he said, the current SL was recently redesigned to look a lot like the SLR. The current S-Class looks more like a Maybach. Mercedes tends to develop a styling language on their top-end models and then pass it down to the rest in relatively quick order. I think the article is right on, the next SL will probably look a lot like this SLS.

Agree, but..............It is very possible the next SL will take design some design cues from the SLS.

For their sake, I hope not! The current SL looks light years better than this.

The next SL will probably take a lot of similar design cues, especially in the rear I think. Hopefully the interior won't be brought to the SL though. The SLS has probably the least exciting interior of any car in its class.

Wat are you talking about in this article, this site cant seriously be this behind......the spy shots for the convertible SLS have been floating around for quite some time and more than one site. Additionally the SLS and SL are not in the same class of car despite both are expensive 100+grand cars there is a huge price gap between the 2 the name suggests it is a Mercedes and nothing more than that did the SLR replace the Sl??, The SLS replaced the SLR....lol wow this poster just lost all credibility with me. no wonder such bias in their articles......http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2009/08/mercedes-benz-sls-amg-roadster-spied.html

Actually, loping off the roof of this beast may be quit an improvement. I've been of the opinion that the roofline is awkward at best and hideous at worst. A convertible version of this car, whether an SL or an SLS might just be a graceful design with nice retro cues. One of you Photoshop wizards should take a crack at it.

If the SL looked like a convertible SLS it would be looking worse than it is now! Please no.
