2011 BMW M5 Information Leak, Turbo V8 On The Way
The car that started it all is due up for a refresh, and we have the most up-to-date information on it.  Thanks to Edmunds, information from a company "insider" has leaked on one of the most iconic vehicles within the past two decades.

Since its incarnation, the BMW M5 was meant to stand apart from the crowd.  It is solely responsible for starting the sport sedan revolution.  By combining an exciting powertrain and solid handling characteristics, in a practical sedan setup, made the car likable with families and enthusiasts alike.  As an M car, its duty is to set the benchmark in its class.  With this in mind, BMW may be upping the ante for the fifth generation, which is rumored to include Formula 1 technology....

I wonder what other companies are going to follow behind BMW and put a KERS system in their sport cars????????????? The KERS system will put the M5 ahead of the pack by far. they are always raising the bar for the other companies from what I have been seeing for the past 20 years.

I think this is it for the horsepower wars, 500-600 hp for a high powered engine will be it. Jean Todt said it himself, lighter more efficient vehicles will be the new trend. Imagine a 600hp, 2500lbs - 2800lbs Ferrari 458, that would be unstoppable.

Now imagine a 5000lb 600hp car. You could actually drive it in everyday life and not be rattled to the bone. The M5 is meant to be driven everyday hence why it is a sedan, and not a 2 door sport car. Light weight may allow it to perform on a track better, but it won't make it any more comfortable.

Actually E class looks worse than 7 Series. I doubt next 5 Series would beat E class in uglyness.

204E60: Do not be so rude man, english is not our native language...and I agree: beauty is in the eye of the beholder cause I like the E more than the 7 series.

What's more durable yet also feasible? The time and money to develop and enjoy a torquey turbocharged engine or to develop and enjoy a high-revving and high horsepower engine with smooth, constant power delivery??? If not the latter, I wish it were...

Then again, some say that all these extra forced-induction stuff are just a bridge to a future with tiny .1L super/turbo-charged AND hybrid/diesel/enthanol AND half wankle, half piston rotary engine! You get the immediate power from the supercharger and hybrid system and the the turbo and diesel to provide the upcoming power delivery... and yada yada yada plus efficiency that comes with it all! Poor traction control/ABS/VSC/VDIM...

I can't wait till someone produces a 50cc engine powering a plug in hybrid. They would have room in price and weight to overbuild the 50cc engine to achieve the absolute best thermodynamic efficiency possible. Being so small and cheap one could incorporate a emissions capturing device as found in that one volvo concept that captures and reburns the emissions to the equivalent of 3 cars. This way the tiny engine could be running silently charging your batteries while you sleep at night and you wouldn't have to worry about filling your house/garage with emissions...
