SPYSHOT: BMW Prepping A1/A-Class Killer?

Car magazine is claiming that BMW has an A-Class/A1 killer in development known internally as the UKL1 (Untere Kompaktklasse (lower compact class).

Look for three variants — 3 door hatch, 5 door hatch, and 2 seat roadster based off the next gen MINI platform and they will come out of the gate with both 3 and 4 cylinder engines.

No launch date was given.

I thought BMW swore before God and all mankind that they would never build a front drive car with a Kidney Grille. Oh how times have changed. Jaguars with diesel engines, Ferraris without a clutch pedal, Lexuses with faulty floor mats. What next, crowd-of-people?!?

Wasn't this going to be the purpose of the 1-series. Instead they moved the 3-series up in price and priced the 1-series where the 3 used to be.
