VIDEO: Lexus LF-A, "The Best Car I Have Ever Driven..."

VIDEO: Lexus LF-A,
With all of the hate on the long-awaited LF-A/LF-L, or whatever Toyota is calling it this week, it is interesting to hear an opinion from another auto journalist.  An experienced one, at that.

Thomas Bangma, a Dutch journalist, goes on to say the LF-A is "the best car he has ever driven," and even goes as far as to rank it up in the same class as the McLaren F1 and Pagani Zonda.  After doing some research, it is clear that this chap has the chops to back up this claim.

Uhm, er.  But the same class as the McLaren F1? That has to be the boldest statement in auto news within the past 10 years.  Whether or not he is right or wrong, the whole LF-A fiasco has just heated up that much more.

Take a look below.

Nice comment to stir up controversy and bring attention to this car....looks like toyota's marketing machine is doing their best to engineer people's perception!

Nice car yes! Same league as McLaren and Zonda not convinced!

Well Zonda and McLaren is already quite different intention. LF-A seems to be in the middle of it. Spec-wise it's closer to CGT 0f 3043lb, 600hp, 8400 rpm, 5.7V10. Though MR is simply quite different. I'm interested to see how Lexus works that out to reduce polar inertia.

Lexus doesn't make the claim that the LF-A is the best sports car in the world, only that it will be one of the best to drive daily.

Right now the only thing Lexus can say about it is that you can't buy one. Until it reaches production level and specs are given and reviews are written it is nothing to me.

Kinda dispoointed that Mclaren V12 redline @ 7500 rpm, while Ferrari constatnly pushes over 8500 rpm.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redline

If LF-A really revs to 9000 rpm, does that indicate future F-line will be taking high rev NA route instead of (cheap) FA?

whore, you should watch the documentary on the F1. Honda couldn't delivery the specs that Mclaren asked for, BMW surpasessed them and delivered a ULEV engine to boot. "BMW delivered the most compelling solution of the vendors we approached".

So much BS little whore....BMW engines are incredibly reliable...and they had won a Formula One Championship before they built the engine that Mclaren chose for the F1.

I can't even read your nonsense anymore, whore. "Small potatoes", "under developed"... you are the badge-whoriest whore ever. It is brain damage reading your bullshit.

FYI, banks in the midwest wouldn't even finance a honda in the seventies because the collateral would rust away so fast.

It's only one man's opinion, but let's face it: for most here it will never be a good car simply because of the badge. A real "enthusiast" would never let a preconceived notion of a badge precede their opinion on an automobile.

Again with all the Lexus hype BEFORE the car comes out (this already happened with the IS-F). Let's wait until the car is officially launched and released before making any definitive assumptions.

the IS-F ended up being amazing. That is why I own one as my daily driver. Yes I did test drive the M3, C63, and RS4. They all offer something different, the mercedes has raw power an incredibly hard and controlled chassis/suspension, and the M3 is amazing, overpriced, but amazing. In unforgiving weather you cannot beat the RS4,. However the best mix of these beasts is offered by the IS-F. For those of you who feel the need to thrash this comment. Please only do so if you HAVE DRIVEN ALL THREE CARS, otherwise you are just perpetuating a debate based on nothing of substance.

I've driven the M3, C63 AMG, RS4, and IS-F, so I guess that means I'm allowed to comment. The order I listed them in -- that's the order in which I would rank them (were the RS4 based on the new A4 I'd put it ahead of the C63 and maybe even the M3). As for the IS-F personally I was not a fan. I didn't like the boy racer bodykit that literally looked like something off the set of Fast and Furious, the ride was ridiculously stiff, the rear seats were unusable, the transmission was constantly hunting for gears, and it was slower than everything else. The only thing it really offered was value versus the competition, but frankly if it came down to it I'd rather have a 335i or new S4 than an IS-F.

StarSearch, perhaps you need to read those reviews and comparison tests again. Yes, they usually said "solid first effort". But they've also pretty universally said "last place".

I don't care about the badge...just show me the numbers and I will be a believer...Also remember that a good car on the tracks, no necessarly is a good car on road...as an example: "the only" argument used by Bimmer Fans: The BMW "will win on the track"....beyond that..most of the time is behind the AMGs on the road and all other qualities that customer is looking for in a luxury sport car....so do not argue till you see all the reviews (If they put the car in production)....If do not see it on the road....I won't belive it.

Right now, the guess is 500 worldwide. Every Lexus dealership in North America will get 1.

There will be 500 for the world, 350 right hand drive, 150 left hand drive. If the demand is there, Lexus will build more.

By the way, California alone has more than 500 paid deposits.

Question, isn't part of the value in owning one of these knowing how rare it is? If the demand is there and Lexus decides to build to fill all the orders, all of a sudden that whole rare concept is gone. You won't see Bugatti building any more then their set quota for this reason alone.

mitchatlexusofmarinmitchatlexusofmarin - 10/13/2009 3:02:44 PM

Yes Joe, but they will not fill all of the orders. There are over 200 dealers in the US, and only 150 available presently to those dealers. They can build many more without saturation.

But these people already put their money down on what they thought would be a limited production item. What if Lexus went and super saturated the market with 10x as many cars? They could probably sell them so in Lexus's eyes that would be a good thing. But in the eyes of someone who already put their money down, they just got scammed.

In my experience, the people who have reserved the car have done so because they want the car. Their motivation was not (at least as expressed to me) to be reserving the car because of scarcity or collectability. I don't have a sense that people will feel scammed.

If the don't sell any....they suck. If they sell too many....they suck.

No one is asking you to buy one.

A company that keeps it's clients as number 1 would sell exactly as many as it needs. If the demand is so great for this supercar then it is a godd thing. There is no need to dilute and go back on your word.

I don't care for this car at all, but for all the people who are bashing this editor, he has one thing on you guys... He has actually driven the cars, so please, before you start calling him stuff, please understand that its his opinion but its based on first hand experience.

So although I do not care for this car, I will reserve judgments regarding its abilities until I have driven one (if ever I do).

numbers are already there if not official. 0-60 around 3.5 secs. top speed above 215 mph. Lap times around the Ring in the 7:20's or less. This guy isn't a lexus enthusiast, he's a super car journalist and enthusiast. He likes fast cars and has driven lots of them. If he says this thing is better than all of them we should take heed. I knew from the get go that it'd be something special. 4.8 liter V10 is relatively small displacement so i knew the weight would be low. A Carbon Fiber tub contributes to that as well. The sound is incredible and it was rumored the engine would rev to 13,000rpm but be limited to 9000rpm to help with the longevity of it. The best materials in the interior would definitely be a must to compete with other cars of it's price so that's a given. The finished product will more than likely be shown in less than 2 weeks. Can't f-ing wait!

Better than a McLaren F1? Give me a break. I don't give a damn what this guy says (never even heard of him). One lap in an LF-A around the track means nothing. The Mclaren F1 has been around for a long time, has been tested, praised and its capabilities proven again and again.

Only time will allow such similar comments to be made about the LF-A if it lives up to the hype.

ive driven bmw's the last 6 years. 2003 330xi, 2005 m3 ( e46) and 2008 335xi
now i have a Lexus IS-F. ill admit the car is a great daily driver, and im sure the lf-a will be more practical than other cars its competing against.
in 6 years of those 3 bmw's i have never gotten as much attention or compliments as i do on the is-f.
one time a cop pulled me over just to ask me how much horsepower the car has. another instance i was filling up gas and the mechanics from the shop came out from their bays and asked me to open the hood just to see whats under it and how it looks. 2 people have said " nice body kit" when i told them its all stock they were shocked. i have to agree the car does look like it has some riced out body kit. but the majority of people have said they think its gorgeous.
now my conclusion is this, when the lease ends, i will absolutely never get another lexus for as long as i live.
the car is awesome, the exhaust note is SICK, its very comfortable, looks beautiful ( to most) but, i really like bmw more, a lot more. ive had the car for 2 months and cant wait to get back into bmw ( m3 )

we here at autospies make fun of lexus, and bash them, but we are crazy enthusiasts that love cars. most people out there,( people who dont go on this site) just like cars. they dont think about the car is hunting for gears, or doesnt offer a manual tranmission, or doesnt have a proper LSD.
have you ever noticed when you speak to most people about lexus, they all love the brand ? besides enthusiasts, im sure you have never spoken to anyone who hates lexus. i have friends who currently have 750li and s550 and still tell me, ( my ls430 was the best)
bottom line, when LFA comes out, it will do well because people love lexus. think about it, why shouldnt they ? luxurious, popular, reliable, lexus has proven themselves a manufacturer that deserves respect for at least their solid efforts.

he's dutch, obviously learned english from the proper english. That is the british who pronounce things the correct way. O'er here in amur-ika we aint pro-nouncin tings right. Get it? And the guy iamdabest, the IS-F for 2010 now gets a proper LSD, so maybe you can take you rubbish comments about never purchasing a lexus again because you like to take it up the wazoo from the BMW group and test drive that one instead of reserving your final judgment on the 1st generation of a car compared to one's that have had 3 to 4 generations before.
