Vw Passat will be discontinued in the Unites States
Volkswagen is set to debut a new mid-size sedan in 2011, making it likely that the Passat sedan and wagon will be discontinued in the US , according to a source who spoke with autoweek.com. The new model will be made in a new factory in Chattanooga , Tennessee, that is expected to begin operations in 2011.

Despite its bigger size, the new model will be priced lower. However, in Europe , the Passat will continue to be sold. A new version will be released in 2011. In the US , the Passat is priced at $27,665 for the sedan and at $29,095 for the wagon version. The upcoming sedan will reportedly be offered at around $20,000. Prof. Dr. Jochem Heizmann, Member of the Board of Volkswagen AG with responsibility for ‘Group Production, said that the US is recognized to be one of the most vital markets for the VW Group.

No Surprise...

Obviously this new VW mid-sizer is the replacement for the Passat.

Apparently VW felt a name change was in order this time around.

VW fan to the heart but the passat has never been a car that i could see myself owning. that being said, i hope the replacement is much sportier (looks and road feel) than the current model.

agreed. the only passat trim i likes was the W8-4motion. i've been seeing the passat cc regularly these days. may be strange not see VW selling passats anymore.

I have always thought of the Passat as a nice alternative to the CAMCORD crowd of cars..They drive nice but their reliability has never been up to class standards. If they do it right they might get my consideration.

I think it cost more than those cars. More in line with the Maxima and Avalon.

bet this will be a giant mistake. Not the loss of the Passat, but the car designed for america.

It is also being built in the U.S., where as the PAssat was built in Germany. At least it won't be made in Mexico like the Beetle.

Another VW down the tubes in the US. VW must hold the title for the most losers in the US market. Ever wonder why? Is it because the Germans consider Americans "losers" because most Americans are not "purebred" like they are?
As a result the Germans send us their leftovers which are good enough for us "halfbreeds".

Nice brand-building, VW.
And leftovers remark is true... 2001 Jetta wagon was part of 10K vehicle overrrun in Germany. Turned into a lucky hit.
