Ford Pondering Moving Euro Market Kuga Production To Kentucky
Ford Motor Co. is moving production of a small sport-utility vehicle from Europe to the U.S. to take advantage of lower labor costs and the weaker dollar, according to three people familiar with the plan.

Ford in October 2011 will shift the Kuga model to Louisville, Kentucky, from a factory in Saarlouis, Germany, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the plan is private. As many as 80,000 a year will be exported to Europe, one of the people said. The dollar has fallen 18 percent against the euro this year, lowering the cost of U.S.-made goods.

“This makes sense because western Europe is not a particularly cheap place to make cars,” said Barclays Capital auto analyst Brian Johnson, who estimates Ford’s labor costs in the U.S. could be $10 an hour lower than in Germany. Johnson, based in Chicago, rates Ford “equal weight.” “Building a car with European specifications on a U.S. assembly line also shows the benefits of having common vehicle platforms.”

i've been wondering how long it would take before someone took advantage of the extra capacity in the US and weak dollar. Who would have guessed a decade or two ago we'd become a low cost export country

This will be great for Louisville. Ford recently consolidated production for its BOF Fullsize SUVs to the Kentucky Truck Plant (KTP) which makes all their super duty pickups and used to make the Excursion. They have their own stamping facility on site and testing facility. I have seen a few mules testing in the area but they were cammoed pretty well.

Ford's second plant in the area is the Fern Valley Rd assembly plant which was Ford's (and possibly all US manufacturers) 1st plant outside of Michigan! It currently produces all the Explorers and its derivatives since the St. Louis Explorer plant closed about 5 years ago. It is a large facility and has lots of capacity, likely more than will be needed for the Kuga (expected to carry the Escape badge in the US). It is suspected that the unibody Explorer may be produced on one of the other lines at the plant but since Ford already has quite a large plant producing the D3 crossovers that may not happen.

Either way Louisville appreciates Ford's involvement and employment.
