Toyota Sources Reveal FT-86 May Be The New Scion tC Instead
Officially, the prototype going on display today at Makuhari Messe is nothing more than a show car, but unlike some of the wild and wacky models that have a way of popping up at the biennial Japanese event, then vanishing, never to be seen again, our sources confirm that the FT-86 will reappear in the not-too-distant future, though one of the unanswered questions is which badge it will wear in the U.S.

It’s possible it will make the jump across the Pacific as a Toyota, but it is also possible, we’re told, that the FT-86 concept could show up as the replacement for the Scion tC, the youth-oriented marque’s most sporty model.

I hope this is the new celica than the Scion TC...The celica is a toyota compact/subcompact ICON...why not bring it back out and this would be the perfect model. but which ever brand they use it for the college students are going to be picking these up like hotcakes.

Agreed I do not understand why they would call it anything other than a Celica. You have the history, price, size all working together. Scion only make sense due to aftermarket assesories, but they could be branded TRD and work out of Toyota dealers.

lol, wouldn't want to brand a sporty car as a Toyota and ruin Toyota's anti fun image now would we?

Seeing as they do also have Subaru and Scion, is this really an issue?

The excitement is growing by the minute.

Yes, enough for you to post something here.

Bring this over as a tC and you have a FAIL. Nothing about it says tC. It would be much better suited to hold the Celica nameplate.

They could just give it the 164hp from the tC and Matrix/Corolla XRS and call it a sports car. That would be fitting in the Toyota lineup as nothing has any kind of performance and power. Last car to do so was probably the 03-05 Corolla Matrix XRS that used the 2ZZ 180hp 4 with VVTL-i. They don't have the MR2 anymore and the Solara was never a competitor and has been lost in a field of Accord Coupes and Altima Coupes.

If they don't want to call it the Celica, then just leave it named the FT-86.

Not to mention price point keeps it out of the Scion lineup. Scions MSRP in the 15-20k range on average. You won't find one for much over 25k (think Scion xB loaded with TRD options). This car with the right combinations could easily put you in the 20-30k range and compete directly against Accord, Altima, Eclipse, etc.

Give it a nice V6 with an AWD option.

That's exactly what it needs, more weight. They managed to design a fairly light sporty car, I say slap a turbo on it and you're gold.

Okay, let me be honest here. While I am admittedly quite fond of the sound that a Subaru flat engine makes (especially with a blow-off valve), I was never truly sold on that engine being in a Toyota. I think it should be a Toyota, but have Toyota engines. The updated 2ZZ with the Supercharger from the Euro-spec Corolla Compressor would be a nice idea. They could easily lay this engine on the side, the way the Previa's was and that would lower the bonnet height if needed. Anyway, back to the point. I would expect Toyota may in fact sell it as a Scion, and deny the Toyota brand truly into territory once occupied by Buick.

yeah, they're going to do what you said tango, that's why it has a toyota badge on the front right? seriously coming to autospies just to read backwash news and see uneducated comments is just a fun part of my day. I really don't see any reason this site exists except for the comments on the stories. It's all comprised of stuff from other people's sites anyway. But besides all that. It's not going to be a scion. Who knows what it will be called but it will more than likely be a toyota. The subaru version will look different. I don't know about better. Toyota has a new guy at the helm, his name is Akio Toyoda. He likes the sporty bit, so i doubt he'll push this to the lower regions of scions when he admits it's Toyota that needs the sport back into it.

I think the only issue I take would be in regards to pricing. As a scion, the pricing will have to stay somewhat low-ball. Brought over as the celica (even with the same equipment) I would bet my left nut that it would be $3K-$4K higher in price.

What's in a name, you ask? Money.
