Reader Poll: Will Toyota Finally Build An Affordable Sports Car?

We all know that Toyota is capable of almost anything, but will they devote the resources to build a great sports car?  You have to admit If you want a new performance car then a modern Toyota probably isn't on your list.

Lexus has shown us that with the recent release of the Lexus LF-A, they have the technology to produce an ultra high end machine, but what about the rest of us?

Creating a $400,000 machine is one thing, but a sporty sub $30,000 car is another.  Toyota has said they need to breathe life into their lineup and a sporty performance car may be just the way to do it.

So question isn't really should Toyota build an affordable sport car.

BUT

Cac Toyota pull it off and build an affordable sports cars that can rekindle the flame of enthusiasts everywhere?

Answer the following question's and let us know:

1. Can Toyota Still Build An Affordable Sports Car?
Yes - Toyota Will Move Into The Enthusiast Market
Maybe - Toyota Will Only Move Into The Market If They Can Make A Profit There

No - Toyota Still Hasn't Decided If Enthusiasts Are Worth Pursuing

2. If Toyota Built A Sports Car What Is The Sweet Spot?
  Sub $20,000
  $20,000 - $30,000
  $30,000 - $40,000

  $40,000 Plus

3. Do You Think Toyota Will Build A Sport Car?
Yes - Toyota Has Seen The Error In Their Ways

Maybe - Again On If It Is Profitable

No - Toyota Won't Do It

Toyota has the know-how to make an affordable coupe that performs well. They proved that back with the Supra. They really let go in terms of that aspect of their lineup and have gotten more Honda-like over the years. Maybe this car can help spur some spirit in Toyota and in Honda to start offering something other than the daily bread.

1. Yes
2. Sub $20,000 = 160hp + 2500lbs
$20,000-$30,000 = 250hp + 3000lbs or 300+ hp and 3500+lbs
$30,000-$40,000 = 350hp + 3000lbs or 400+ hp and 3500+lbs
Greater than $40,000 = 400+ hp and less then 3500 lbs
3.Maybe, they might build a cheaper sports car but the jury is still out whether they want to taint the Toyota name with something that is fun.

I was going to post something like Joe's and his is pretty close to what I was going to post, so I'll go with his numbers since mine was going to be about HP/trim at a given price point.

What's crazy, is that Toyota building to very different sports cars, one for the mainstream, and one for the uber-luxury set. There are high expectations for the "affordable" offering to be rather good on the roads and comfortable on the inside. The buzz is proving that Toyota may have what it takes to really build credible vehicles at those price points and markets.

being among the few who know the difference between a sports car and a sporty car, i would point out that neither the honda S2000 nor the toyota mr2, both TRUE sports cars, managed to generate enough volume/profit to be kept in their respective lineups.

even the celica, a sporty car, apparently could not generate enuff volume to be kept alive.

it seems the ONLY low priced sports car that has been viable in recent years, is the Mazda Miata. toyota needs to see what mazda's done to make a TRUE low cost sports car, and come up with their own version.

Some folks need to realize that the Supra was in 1995. Almost 20 years ago. Most of the folks who desinged that Supra are long since gone.
And it shows.

@LexSucks

Actualy the man behind the IS-F and LF-A is Yukihiko Yaguchi, he worked on the supra and chaser tourer v.

In typical AutoSpies fashion, with the exception of Joe_Liomon, nobody bothered to read what the original poster was asking us to do. It's no wonder there is so much arguing and whatnot going on here. Anyway, before I fall victim to the same level of idiocy, let me put my two cents in:

1. Yes (They have the money and the know-how. Toyota has done sporty and affordable all its existence - MR2, Corolla GT-S, Celica GT-4 - they just need to step off trying to be the American Japanese company. While they are at it, ditch bullshit NASCAR and get back into WRC, where they belong)

2. 20,000-30,000 (Sub-20k will perhaps require the car to either be bare bones, super-tiny, or both...not exactly a good thing for the widest market spread)

3. Maybe (It's not necessarily only about profitability, but also about if the car in question doesn't seem to be too aggressive. After all it's got to sit beside the likes of the Avalon and Camry in the showrooms. But I say who cares? Camry and Avalon need a bit of viagra in their veins anyway)
