STUD OR DUD? Could Porsche's 928 Unseat Aston's DB9 As The Sexiest GT Around?

STUD OR DUD? Could Porsche's 928 Unseat Aston's DB9 As The Sexiest GT Around?
Get ready for a blast from Porsche’s past! The German firm is developing a luxurious, front-engined grand tourer – a spiritual successor to the 928 built between 1977 and 1995. The ‘new 928’ will be a fifth model line, and is designed to sit above the sportier 911 in the range.

With the compact Boxster and Cayman, the 911, the Cayenne SUV and four-door Panamera, Porsche would appear to have most bases covered. But it’s notable for its absence in the front-engined GT segment. The newcomer will allow the brand to take on rivals such as the Ferrari 599 GTB, Bentley Continental GT and Aston Martin DB9. And our exclusive pictures show exactly why the curvy, Panamera-based coupé is set to stun the competition.

That is a nice looking car, probably a good $120,000 looking style... but imo they will have to ditch the cheap/tacky looking front bumper/grill if they hope to compete style wise.

the front grille i think is perfect it SCREAMS porsche. this was nicely done and kudos to whoever did this. I can say its 100% STUD and the DB9 will have some very stiff competition if porsche decides to roll with this.

maybe it's just me but doesn't that "front bumper/grill look like the grill on the 599?

The grill looks like Porsche got in a fight with Nissan and lost a tooth.

The porsche looks almost exaclty like a ferrari 599. Plus, the grid-style loser grille doesnt match the curviness of the rest of the car. I mean, if you ignore the grille, this is the best looking porsche ever.

someone obviously cranked up photoshop and slapped some porsche cues on an aston....exciting.

Nope performance maybe, but style Porsche will never compete with Aston on style.

agreed, as synonymous as porche is with performance, aston is with style

Looks like a Jag rear end. Ah, its ok tho.

I see Jag in the rear too - it's almost "un-German" in appearance.

I'm so sick of Autospies doing "stud or dud" on computer generated images based on mere speculation. Let's wait until the car actually comes out.

Derivative but nicely done.

Name me a car whose styling isn't derivative and I'll name you one that will not sell. I agree with you general sentiment, though. It's nicely done, though not too Porsche-looking. I definitely see a Corvette/599 mashup in the front.

No...this price point is Dominated by the Jaguar XKE

No it can't unseat the Aston. But I'm ecstatic that Porsche is finally moving beyond the 911 template, although this photo looks as much Ferrari as Porsche.

Lots of people will hate it just like they hated the SLS AMG but I will again hop on the other bandwagon and say it looks good. I hope the next Porsche looks like a proper car not so awkward as the Panamera. I trust it will have good power execution and great craftsmanship. The 911 will always be Porsche's Iconic car but having a GT car situated above the 911 is a smart decision.

As for unseating any Aston that is a hard task even for any other high end automaker. It will look like a stud but may not be as sexy as an Aston will.

Doesn't mean it will be a bad looking car though. It's still too early to make that bold of a statement.

I think it looks like a Porsche Corvette. Sooooooo.... no, not going to unseat the Aston Martin anything in style.

STUD!
But the last 928 15 years ago had 350hp. So with all huge increases in HP with all manufacturers this car SHOULD come with 500HP for the BASE MODEL. Otherwise its a snoozer.

those headlights are atrocious! Keep the 911 style single lamp with double projector as in the new models and change those rear lights to a more porsche type then it won't look like a DBS rip off with goofy headlights. other than that, hope it isnt too big or heavy and offers a choice to the 911. But is it upmarket or below market of 911 Turbo?

Stud! Although I am not as thrilled with the styling of the front, love the other shot from the rear though. Also, there is nothing wrong with getting opinions on renderings of future models to come out, someone above said is was pointless- hardly...

The rear looks very similar to an Aston Martin (which is good, i guess) but it would never beat an Aston style-wise, and the only reason I'd buy it (if I could) is because its a new, unique car, something people arent really used to seeing.

Ugly front end with an Aston rear end. I guess the Aston won in the design department in my opinion. Aston is still a better looking car. The Porsche looks very soft from the front to a more angular and extreme toward the rear, which doesn't mix very well.

Front looks nice but the rear rendition looks too "un-porsche" like. Its too much of a photoshop between an Aston/Jag/Porsche. The artist who did this rendition took the sides right off a Ferrari.

I think it should be a success, though I think the design can use some cleaning up.
