The New Sports Cars: BMW's X6M Vs. Porsche's Panamera Turbo, What Would You Have?
After the implosion of sport sedans since BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi made them household names, it seems that a new wave of vehicles are making landfall.  They are not wagons and if you really want to stretch it you cannot consider them sport-utility vehicles either.

With BMW's X6M turning 'Ring times just as fast as the E46 M3 it certainly is no slouch, and Porsche's Panamera Turbo pulling sub four second 0-60 launch times it is a lightning-quick large sedan.

But no one thought of this; pitting them against each other.

Autozeitung reports, in broken English:

"BMW X6 M and Porsche Panamera Turbo interpret the new sports car: twin-turbo V8 engine and four-wheel technology mixed with distinctive body - these two race cars match their own ideal line defined

A luxury sedan carrying a step-back and provides maximum comfort.  SUVs are practical, robust and heavy. As far as the stereotypes.  But that grant Porsche Panamera Turbo and BMW X6 M thoroughly.  Both cars extend the classical requirements for an original look and spice up the design with a brutal performance. You do not want but just being different than the automotive mass, but above all one thing - speed."

Tough question, indeed.  But what would you have?

Humm, it's a competition between the ugly and grotesque, I'm not sure which car is which.

I'll take the Porsche, it's slightly less weird.

Oh buy the way sports cars a 2 doors with no are small back seats. These are sports, er, um, sportsthings.

Have you seen one in person yet? It's unbelievable. It's one of those cars that just doesn't photograph well.

Kind of an odd comparison. The X6M is a four seat SUV/tall thing/SAV that costs roughly $90k. The Panamera Turbo is a four seat car/sedan/hatchback thing that costs $130k+. I can't see too much cross shopping.

The mustang is somehow considered a sports car and look how under engineered it is. In comparison they are much more of a sports car than mustang will ever be.

Mustang is a "muscle car" or "pony car"

It's easy to sit back and be an armchair quarter back.

But if any of you drove both, especially on the TRACK, you would NOT be saying these cars do not have sporting blood running through their veins.

Actually all you need is the first corner with the tires howling past your tolerance to know that they are not.

Either or. Doesn't matter cause if they were given to me I would take them back to their respective dealers (as they were given to me, no charge). And trade them in for better models. If I traded the Porsche and needed 4 doors, I would get a Cayenne model. If it was the Bimmer I would go for the loaded X5.

Panamera is an easy choice. Looks nicer, inside and out.

I think Porsche Cayenne Turbo or Turbo S is more direct competitor of X6M.
But if to choose between these two, i'll take X6M. Panamera is just too ugly, X6M is also no better design wise but it's slightly higher ground clearance is very useful for my needs.

Both cars are 4 seaters and they compete with one another.

The Porsche Cayenne would compete with the BMW X5M.

I'm with you Jugnu, at least I could take the X6M skiing.

I would have either car and would have to test drive both a few times to decide, but I think I would drive off with the Porsche Panamera.

I'd take the X6M because those lazy Porsche designers should not be rewarded for their half-a**ed work.

X6M for sure. Save the $45k and get the free maintenance in the BMW. I do like the panamera, but the X6M is awesome, yes have driven it a few times. Im and SUV kinda guy, but I love my 335, so its a nice mix.

X6M without hesitation. If i buy a porsche its for the 911's. If i want a classy 4 door coupe, the CLS, the panamera is just ugly. The X6M is engineeringly unique. Its just mind boggling.

An M version of the 5 series Grand Turismo would be the best competitor. Both are 4 door hatchback, V8, turbo and I'm sure you could get the 5 with Xdrive.

I dont know why people are saying the Panamera looks better in person. I saw one today, it looks exactly the same as it does in pictures: ugly. The bloated egg shape profile is not attractive and the interior looks incoherent. Not sure what they were trying to accomplish with this car but its absolutely horrendous.

The Panamera is a 4 door sports car. I just read that some car magazine got a 3.3 sec 0-60 mph on the Porsche and don't forget the sub 8 min 'Ring time...if that's not a "sports car", what is?

I have not seen the Panamara in the flesh. I suspect that it will look better or worse depending upon what color it is. Neither car could be called attractive.I have seen a bunch of X6's and I don't see the point of it over an X5. It simply does not make the case for me as a sportscar SUV. I admit the Panamara is no beauty but a sedan makes more of a case for the sports car then the SUV does. For that reason alone I would take it over the S6. Plus both Road and Track and Car and Driver are showing a 0 to 60 in 3.3 and 3.4 seconds. For a 4dr sedan that is incredible! Also I personally like a car with buttons then to try and figure out BMW's I drive. Porsche should do a slight restyle regarding the shape of the rear window behind the C pillar. By making it longer and more "911" in shape it would visually reduce the bulkyness that the current design has.

Regarding the Mustang comments the only thing keeping it from being a sports car I would think is it's solid rear axle. The 2010 with the "track pac" I've read is quite a decent handling car. The 2011 with it's new 400HP "coyote" DI engine was quoted by some publication as lapping an unamed track(or I just don't remember) quicker then a current M3. Now that's quite a boast but it will be interesting to see
how Ford has further improved the Mustang's performance over the 2010 version. The Mustang seems to be a car more for bridging the gap between the muscle car and the sports car.
