GM Pisses Off German Government And Decides To Keep Opel
Workers at automaker Opel planned walkouts to protest General Motor Co.'s decision not to sell the European subsidiary, while Germany's government vowed Wednesday to recover euro1.5 billion ($2.2 billion) it loaned GM to finance the sale.

Klaus Franz, Adam Opel GmbH's top employee representative, said workers would start brief work stoppages Thursday.

GM decided late Tuesday to pull out of the deal with Magna International Inc. and Russian bank Sberbank. It was an abrupt end to months of negotiations that saw Germany's government agree to provide euro4.5 billion in financial aid for the deal, reached in September.

China will soon rule the world economics. It's true, but the hope dies last! :)

The Chinese economy is spiraling down in a free fall do to the fact it's cheaper to manufacture things in other south east Asian countries. Plus they specialize in nothing and try to be the master at everything. Unlike Korea which specialized in cars and electronics and Japan that did the same. There are 65 Chinese brands...65! So they don't exactly have quality or pass any European or American crash test from shoddy cheap mild steal they use.

It's true, but Great Wall Motors passed already european crash tests. In fact they're building their first plant in European Union, in Bulgaria, now and since 2011 they begin to sell vechicles on all the EU markets.

"The Chinese economy is spiraling down in a free fall"

This is not true. The Chinese economy is very strong. They hold most of the US's debt and half of their average income goes into savings.

china bashing eurowhores need to read Gavin Menzies' (a Brit's) books, "1421" and "1434."

the West only leapfrogged China's far more advanced science and technology, after a technology transfer FROM china in the 15th Century. and an unfortunate chinese smugness that let them sit on their laurels and NOT advance much further for a few centuries.

both are FASCINATING READS. if you are not the book reading type, at least read excerpts of those books on amazon.com. you'll be tempted to buy them. you can also get fascinating input from readers of those books at the sites www.1421 and www.1434.

Keeping OPEL is the last opportunity for GM to save its presence in Europe. That's because nobody likes that stupid Daewoo-Chevy thing and if they loose OPEL they'll loose Europe with around 50 different markets.

Good for you GM!

Agreed. I'm sure that GM wanted Opel all along, but went along with a proposed sale, to please Angela who was up for re-election. The moment the election was over, they backed out.

Giving Opel to Putin's friends would have been a disaster.

GM needs an automobile plant that will build right sided steering wheel vehicles, today about 66% of the world's people live in right-hand traffic countries and 34% in left-hand traffic countries. About 72% of the world's total road distance carries traffic on the right, and 28% on the left.

Its unfortunate that GM is keeping Opel, especially that they are planning to laying off 10,000 workers...

What makes you think the eventual owner wouldn't have laid off people? The Germans were protecting German jobs, to the detriment of jobs in the UK, France, and Spain.

GM did the right thing for GM and for Europe.
