Michigan Discovers They Be The Last Ones Still Buying American Cars

Michigan car buyers tend to purchase what their neighbors make, but that doesn't matter as much to the rest of the country, according to an analysis of data from the "cash for clunkers" incentive program.

"We really are a whole different planet here in Michigan," said Stephanie Brinley, product analyst for AutoPacific Inc. in Troy.

For example: 81.1 percent of Michiganians traded in domestic clunkers and bought domestic replacements, but that number dropped to 42.8 percent in the rest of the nation, according to a breakdown of data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on the program, officially known as the Car Allowance Rebate System, intended to boost sales of fuel efficient vehicles.

Maybe it's because no one likes American products because they are not as good as Japanese ones in terms of refinement, build quality, reliability, performance, comfort, features, paint, fit and finish, electronics, stereo's, gadgets and the list goes on and on and on. How can they compete when the jap's don't have to pay a bunch of prick union jerks, health care, and a partridge in a pair tree.

Actually reliability is pretty much even these days with the American manufacturers inching ahead of the Japanese. And as for gadgets I would put forward Synch and OnStar as two gadgets that the other manufacturers can not touch. I could also make a case for performance when you put American's against Japanese, I mean the ZR1 has better performance than the Lexus LAF and the Cobalt SS I beleive is a little faster than a Civic Si and nothing coming from the land of the rising sun can touch a CTS-V, I think Bob Lutz proved that last week.

Honda and Toyota aren't the gold standard, I thought most people were starting to realize that... *shrugs*

That's right Toyota makes the most reliable cars on the planet that is right up to the point where they accelerate to max speed and kill everbody inside them. Also for the past 2 years GM and Ford have been beating Toyota and Honda on initial quality surveys. Also Cadilac has been rated better than Lexus so it is across the board, not just hit or miss. Toyota specifically has made some changes to get themselves back on top but most of that was because they realized that they could not sustain their quality levels and still be the number 1 car manufacturer. Why else do you think they will not be doing updates to their cars?

Would that be because they do not even make anything in that class? What would you like to see put a time in for that event? The Lexus L model would get dusted by the Lancer anyway. Maybe an Acord or one of those SH Acuras? I see you are a Nissan fan would you put any Infinity on the track against the CTS-V? Hell the Z would probably get beat and the GT-R would not beat it that badly and it is deffinitly in another class. Possibly an Armada could run it off the road?

The performance aspect is only a small part of the may the best car win ad campaign. Here is some blatant gm propaganda to see what I mean.

this is in line with a letter to one of the car magazines from california.

the guy said just about NO ONE buys a domestic there. all the detroit iron he sees on the freeways tends to be either 1) a rental or other FLEET vehicle (cop, utility co., etc.) or 2) have out-of-state plates.

so THIS guy isn't a racist?

not to mention, uninformed.

japanese car plants are unionized too; and ALL japanese have to have health insurance. but the costs are but a fraction of what we in the u.s. COLLECTIVELY pay, while they ALSO get far better care for the few pennies they pay. (of course, millions of americans who can't afford it have NO insurance at all; so they pay zero, and get zero care. except in emergency rooms which cost more for ALL of us.)

japanese "socialized medicine" is so good, they rate #1 in low infant mortality rate. vs. the u.s. rank of 30-odd some! and they also have the longest lived geezers on the planet.

the japanese are just SMARTER in avoiding getting ripped off by their health/death care industry. as well as having smarter auto execs. amd managers.
