VW Hits The Mark, Becomes Largest Auto Maker

VW Hits The Mark, Becomes Largest Auto Maker

Congratulations, Volkswagen!

In lieu of this monumental occasion I will be taking delivery of a Touareg V6 TDI today.  Probably just a coincidence though.

Autocar reports:

"Volkswagen has overtaken Toyota to become the world’s largest carmaker on units produced, according to the latest set of production figures.

German reports over the weekend quoted the figures from industry analysts Global Insight. The figures said the VW Group manufactured 4.4 million units in the first nine months of 2009 to Toyota’s 4.0m.

Ford was listed as the world’s third largest manufacturer with 3.7m units produced, just ahead of General Motors with 3.6m units."

Whore, you're pissed, right ?

Just remember the little party of yours you had when Toyota took the first spot a few years ago. You probably did not cared much about the poor out of shape and distraught Mike Tyson that GM already was at that time...

LOL.. Well it was 10 years earlier than they thought it would be. But it just goes to show how placing your eggs in several baskets can insulate you. Of course if VW was far more successful in the US market then those eggs might not have been place in as many baskets.

in lieu of? i think u mean "in light of."

and either way....lame. Were you waiting for this momentous occasion to justify your next purchase? Is that an actual reason to buy a car?? Only for a member of the GermanSpies team.

I appreciate the wording tip. I will add that to my vault.

Referring to the delivery of a car, it is a press car. You know what they say about assuming...

It's official. VW now makes the best cars in the world.

Reason? Because they sell the most. Or at least that was the reason that Toyota Fans used to proclaim Toyota as building the best cars.

Some aspects of what you say is true. Toyota does make probably the best quality vehicles in the world. VW isnt far off i would argue. Ive had an Audi for 6 years now (A4, previous gen) the only time it went back to the dealer was for its routine service. A friend of mine has had his Lexus IS350 (previous gen) since the 99, Still running as if its brand new.

I dont think its quality that separates these two brands. Why would someone buy a VW instead of a Toyota or vice versa? I dont know..

"Toyota does make probably the best quality vehicles in the world."

- I don't agree with that at all.

VW makes great cars that aren't reliable to save their lives. They've always sucked, save the old air cooled Beetle. Sounds like a domestic make, except for the "great cars" part.

I really cannot understand many of you guys. Volkswagen has 7 brands (VW, Skoda, Seat, Audi, Bugatti, Lamborghini and Porshe) 3 of them are super-luxury with very low sales. Just several months ago GM had 12 brands (Buick, Chevy, Cadillac, Hummer, Saturn, GMC, Pontiac, OPEL, Vauxhall, GM-Daewoo, Holden, Saab), Ford 7+ brands (Ford, Mercury, Lincoln, Volvo, Land Rover, Jaguar, Aston Martin and big part of Mazda) and they were on the top of sales. Now Toyota has 5+ brands (Toyota, Lexus, Scion, Daihatsu, Hino and shares in Isuzu, Yamaha and Fuji), so where's the problem!?!

It's not so important how many brands do you have. The most important thing is who sells more in China. Because if you like it, or you don't, China is the biggest market on the planet now and who sells most in China will be on the top.

Funny how we reported this like Thursday of last week and few noticed. So we reposted it, and now all of the sudden everyone has it.

I guess everyone else was distracted by SEMA.

Anybody remember when some of their cars were catching on fire? I think that was only a few model years ago. Lets see how long they can stay at the stop before steering wheels start coming off in people's hands.
