The Truth About Speed Traps: Deterrent Or Just A Revenue Stream?

The Truth About Speed Traps: Deterrent Or Just A Revenue Stream?
For the half-century since radar guns first started picking off lead-footed drivers on America's highways, the speed trap has been an unseemly topic. To the busted, it's what it sounds like — a dirty kind of ambush, often employing a sudden drop in the legal speed limit to set the trap, and a traffic officer's sniperlike trigger pull to seal the deal.

To municipalities and law enforcement agencies, it's not a trap but a necessary evil, and a crucial deterrent to keep rampant, potentially dangerous speeders in constant fear for their licenses. The fact that it rakes in cash for the city, county or state just makes it a win-win for the good guys.

I never drive without my Valentine 1. It is great at sniffing out radar. I wish it was just easier to detect stupid laser. Both my speeding tickets have been from laser.

speed traps are terrible. shame on you, suburban and rural america. I'm glad I live in a city, where the police have real crime to pursue and you have to do something highly egregious on the road for an officer to take the time to make a traffic stop.

Let's see. Speed traps are probably partial deterrent and partial revenue generation. Their are alot of idiotic driver's who shouldn't be driving and speed traps are for them. I myself don't really worry about whether they are revenue generation device or a deterrent as I drive responsibly and have gotten only 1 ticket in approx. 10 years. Drive smart and you can drive over the speed limit without a radar detector and not get caught.

Hyundaismoke: You are a troll.

If you didn't speed, you wouldn't be part of the revenue stream.

To add to my point, lets see something here, a tax of idiotic drivers, or higher taxes for everyone else, I'll choose the former, THANK YOU.

To add to the point about suburban cops etc., many drug busts, murders, kidnappers(amber alerts) etc. have been caught by "silly" traffic stops.

Dear Police, keep doing what you are doing, I promise you half of all of your stops will be the people complaining on this board. Thank you for your service.

If they want to put a stop to speeders, then have all cars sold in the US come equipped with a limiter. Make all cars unable to exceed say 90. I know I will get deboosted for this, I don't support it, just playing advocate. What this does:

1) Keeps ALL cars in a range of speed, nobody is going to fly down the road constantly hitting the limiter and being brought back to 75-80 before the engine kicks back in. Either that or they will be in the shop more often for damaging the engine as it keeps bumping the governor.

2) Allows easier pursuit and no high speed chases on highways. Only being able to go so fast and allowing the police to go above the limiters on their own cars would bring more chases to safer ends, the evader cannot outrun the cops. Although I like OnStar better for it's ability to shut a car down.

But in the realm of police using their traps, go with the flow of traffic and you won't get pinched. I make it a point to never be the LONE soldier on the highway. As in, if I am going through a bunch of cars in a grouping and get ahead, I will move up to the next pack quickly so I am not in "no mans land". It also helps to not be the first or last in the line of cars traveling.

And for the people who like to lane hog, keep checking your mirrors every few seconds, it's trained in driver's ed and I do it constantly. If someone is coming behind you move over, if someone flashes, move over. It's not your duty to make me go slow behind you. We should have another topic on here about people who don't move.

If everyone drove on the first two right lanes and used the left lane only for passing like they do in Europe, then there wouldn't be a need for a speedlimit and far less accidents would happen.
