Europe is like a whole other continent. Its citizens tolerate insane levels of taxation, live happily in extremely close quarters, and possess fashion sensibilities that foster foreign looking footwear and business suits dyed colors we associate with the management ranks of the "oldest profession." Now the Euro elites are eschewing lux sedans and SUVs in favor of "something different." Something like the current crop of bucks-up hatchbacks including BMW's X6, the forthcoming Audi A7, and the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo. Maybe Europe loves hatchbacks simply because Americans hate them and they're P.O.'d at us for grenading the global economy.

Maybe this new vehicular sub-genre suits the European mode of business travel, wherein it makes more sense for three or four execs to share a car for a high-speed autobahn blast between adjacent cities. Whatever, these platypuses -- some prettier than others -- are coming to our shores, if only in niche volumes. BMW promises the GT will surpass the current 5 Series wagon's 1000 per year, and hints that we probably won't have the next-gen 5 wagon to kick around, so wagon-loving Bimmerphiles may as well make peace with this thing. And you can trust us when we say that it has a commanding presence on the road that doesn't does fully come across in photos (please forgive us for making similar allegations about the Panamera).

Fashion-forward Yanks who can be coaxed into a test-spin of this too-tall car/too-short SUV will be impressed with its Swiss-Army-knife versatility and after a few miles at the helm of the 550i GT, they may think they've stumbled across a Filene's Basement bargain on a slightly irregular 7 Series ($82,280 if perfect, now $65,000!). Power flows from the 7's formidable 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 through a new eight-speed automatic to the rear wheels (AWD and the six-cylinder 535i variant follow mid-year).

Bottom line: In our book, tall, 5000-pound vehicles wear the moniker "ultimate driving machine" a little uncomfortably.

beleive it or not this car is going to sell and tI thought from the beginning it will out sell the wagons. the 5 series wagons were always hot to me its just there is a VERY select few that own them in the states. I think the "YUPPIE" soccer moms are going to love this car and embrace it better than the actual wagon. I think this will be here to stay other than the Pontiac Aztec back i think the interior is phenominal they way they did the styling. It has just about as much room as a 7er in a 5 series package and you also have utility to carry lots of things.

I like this car and i will say it again BMW pushed the envelope on the design and you know they did because Audi also has the A5 sportback which is also a nice looking car. if they can just refresh the back end in a couple of years people will like it more than they do now.

That is saying alot considering how much MotorTrend typically rags on BMW models (they were the only magazine I have seen that hated the new 750, every other one said it was best in class, and they named the G37 "victorious" over the 335i despite it losing in every single measurable way). MotorTrend is the yin to Car and Driver's yang, and again all the reviews of the 5GT have been positive, even this one (more tepidly so, but still positive).

the problem is no one in America buys wagons. Mercedes sells very few E-class wagons here, Audi sells very few A6 Avants, and BMW sold very few 5-Series wagons. All great vehicles, all sold terribly in the U.S. Consumers voted with their wallets, and it was "sedan" or "SUV" when it came to buying.

I'm guessing I've done something you haven't -- I've seen and been in the 5GT. There's alot more function there than a sedan. As much as an SUV? No, but if I run to Best Buy to pick up that mini-fridge, TV, or entertainment system, guess what? I can put it in the 5GT. I can't do that in a sedan. The rear seat accomodations are also much better in the 5GT than in a regular sedan. Frankly it's like a more useful 7-Series for 70% of the price.

For someone who wants better practicality than a sedan without having to be seen in a mommy-mobile wagon (which describes my wife) and without having to give up the drive of a car (which describes me), the GT makes sense. It's not going to be for everyone, but it's not supposed to be. It just needs to be for more people than the 5-Series wagon was, and that shouldn't be too hard. BMW will sell enough of them to justify it existing, though I do predict slow sales as first, which will lead to people saying "I told you so, it's a POS", when in reality the problem isn't the car, it's in BMW's launch decisions. In my opinion their biggest error with the vehicle is not launching the 535i xDrive version of it first. I don't know how many people will pay $65-75k for the rear drive, twin turbo V8, "practical" car. If they had chosen to launch with the $55-65k all-wheel drive turbo 6-cylinder instead, I believe they'd see results that would surprise the naysayers on here.

grysko, I agree, the least attractive view of the car is from the rear. Having seen it in person, however, it's MUCH better looking in real life. The back is definitely pretty bulky, but not as gigantic as it appears in photos. Do I think it's the worlds prettiest car? Of course not. But did the appearance put me off and make me dislike it? No, in fact it was the opposite. I already liked the idea of the car, just wasn't sure about the execution. Seeing it in the flesh alleviated my concerns. Again, it won't be for everyone, but look at it this way -- it couldn't possibly sell worse than the 5-Series wagon, and that's all BMW is shooting for here. Plus I bet there'll be a lot of people who will look at the car as a bargain priced 7-Series. It's not missing anything on the luxury or creature comfort side, and I wouldn't be surprised if some of the people currently leasing the previous generation 7-Series opt for a 5GT versus raising their payments $400 to get into a new 7-Series. It's certainly nicer than the 7's they already have (which makes me very, very excited for the next 5-Series sedan).

looks weird, but the interior packaging is what makes this make sense. I bet that if you sat inside of one and took it on a roadtrip with 3 friends (or your girl and another couple), the lightbulb would come on in your head and you'd say 'aha! now I get it.'

I think the car exterior is wacky beyond belief. That said I love the interior and I don't doubt BMW will reach its very humble sales goals of 1000 cars for the U.S.. Once again a car design for the China market.

The X6 wasnt built to fight the FX, and despite the fact the FX is aimed at the much more expensive X5 the X5 outsells it by a large margin. Not to mention the X6 was never intented to be a huge seller seller, nor is a car that costs more than the X5 purpose built to fight a car that is thousands less than the X5 which it is thousands more than, regardless of whether or not the GT or X6 make sense and they dont, your comments are ignorrant, and are without merit
