Will Toyota Plans For A Larger Prius Succeeed?
Toyota is planning a larger version of its popular Prius hybrid, which will be powered by a new kind of battery, a Japanese newspaper reported Friday.

The new Prius, either a station wagon or SUV, is set to go on sale by the end of next year. It will be the first from Toyota Motor Corp. with a lithium-ion battery, which is more powerful than the nickel-metal hydride battery now in its hybrids, according to the nationally circulated Yomiuri newspaper.

Toyota, the world's top automaker, declined comment on product plans.

The Yomiuri said the Prius will sell for about 2 million yen ($22,000), but did not give details.

A larger prius... I don't think it would be a station wagon or suv... I think it would closest equate to a hybrid sienna...

Why wouldnt it succeed? If Toyota drops a Prius crossover, they will kill the game. As a matter of fact, I think it wouldve been smarter to do Prius as its own brand before that Scion garbage.

This is going to be expensive and not a real volume money maker because the margins are so low.

vw only surpassed toyota because porsche sales (among other brands) can now be included as part of the "VW Group."

Yes, just don't make it look anything as bad as the concept shown above.

Your rambling critique misses the mark, sails through the air, and lands in a plate of sushi.

If Toyota moved upmarket, the act would eat into sales of entry level Lexus vehicles.

Who calls an Elantra near luxury? Come on put down the crack pipe and back away slowly.

Well, for one reason, the 300C, Lucerne and Azera all have gaudy downscale interiors. I would consider a redesigned Lucerne, however.

as usual, toyota makes a single product (in this case the prius) that appeals powerfully to group of people (in this case, green communists). product sells well. then toyota tries to be all things to all people by diminishing the product's strength (in this case, gas mileage) and ruins what it initially built with the dumbed down versions (this larger prius, the lexus HS).

eventually, all their cars turn into glorified corollas and camrys.

and what's wrong with camrys and corollas? they only happen to be among the most popular sedans in the country. with unmatched REALIBILITY and general COMPETENCE.

and the glorified camry known as the lexus ES is one of the most popular luxury cars too.

I don't think 1 website calling something a near luxury vehicle automatically makes it one. BTW I looked and can't find the word luxury in relation to the Elantra in the article you posted by edmudnds (http://www.autospies.com/news/Hyundai-Elantra-Touring-better-than-a-Mazda-3-or-SAAB-9-3-Wagon-Edmunds-thinks-so-and-so-do-I-43666/), nor did it contain the word SAAB or 9-3.

Also calling something a better value doesn't mean it is a better vehicle nor does it mean it is in the same class. A Toyota Prius is a better value for someone looking for point A-B transportation than a Ferrari Enzo, but I don't think anyone would call the Toyota a better car or say it was in the same class.

Either this is demonstrating your poor reading comprehension skills or it is demonstrating completely blind loyalty.

Also from now on when replying to comments could you click the REPLY TO THIS COMMENT link instead of just adding your crap to the bottom of the comments, it makes it very difficult to follow the discussion.

GM tried to make hybrid pickups, which were a total FLOP.

if anyone can make a viable pickup sized hybrid, (or station wagor or VAN or suv/crossover in this case), it is toyota.

if they can make a roomy people carrier with 30+ mpg (which the sienna is already close to getting already), it will KILL the competition!
