Inside Line: 2010 Ferrari 458 Italia First Drive
Ping open the driver-side door — it's a high-pressure die-cast piece, all metal and yet light as carbon fiber and it does indeed open with a resounding ping. You're presented with a fairly challenging new cabin design, as Ferrari has been brave here and rethought many of the standard control functions of a sports car.

It doesn't take long for the 4.5-liter V8 to come alive. Given the stratospheric specific output of 570 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and peak torque of 398 pound-feet at 6,000 rpm, it works from surprisingly low revs. Throttle response is razor-sharp, and the exhaust noise, as you'd expect from Ferrari, is sensational.

Was it a mistake to fit a dual-clutch gearbox? Quite simply, no. The seven-speed automated manual transmission involves you to just the right degree, but retains that almost otherworldly smoothness and efficiency only present with a dual-clutch design.

The 2010 Ferrari 458 Italia is not just a Ferrari; it's one of the most modern sports cars on the road. It says that Ferrari is not just about passion and performance but also about technology and leadership.

They could've at least made a quick video

From a styling perspective, this is not one of Ferrari's better designs. The headlights look awkwardly misformed. The large triangular gaps between the base of the headlights and the hood make it look like a bad fit. The tail lacks harmony and flow. But I bet it goes like stink! :-)

The taillight and rear radiator vents look like the results of my sketches when I run out of ideas, but overall, this car is a great departure from Ferrari's recent entry into extremely bland styling - like I said many times before, I barely noticed a 599 while driving home at dusk. I think all the car really needs is either shinier, metallic, duel-color paint or sharper edges.

I'm sorry, but this car is sex on wheels. The curves are perfection; those small details like the gap next to the headlights add a distinctive hard edged look to the front, offsetting the less aggressive lower valance.

I can't wait to see one in person. Ferrari has done it yet again.

As much as I respect the genuinely Italian blend of technology and passion at creating it with clear purpose in mind, I loathe lame farting propaganda of modern marketing agents, disguised as journalists.

> Ping open the driver-side door — it's a high-pressure die-cast piece,

Die-cast piece of metal, doesn't matter how high the pressure was that created it, is:
- neither as resistant to stress as the carbon fiber equivalent component
- nor as light

But it's cheaper. That's why it appears here. Because it's not a top end Ferrari.

Thank you for attention.

612, 599 than California and now 458 italia. There is just something missing in design department. The lack of absolute beauty and wow. Something that Murcielago LP640 or LP560-4 have in abundance. I think it is more about aerodynamics interfering with designers than Ferrari designers running out of ideas and inspirations. But still Ferrari and pininfarina can do lot better. Ferrari California can be called ugly and 612 is bland and boring.

I agree. The latest Ferraris are not as beautiful as they used to be. They grab attention because of their rarity, but if you were to compare them with Lambos, Aston Martins, heck even the R8, they don't look that good.

I have to disagree, the 612 is a beautiful vehicle along with this 458.

It's Pinninfarina, they have seem to have lost the way.

I said this in another post and I will say it again. You guys have to give this car a chance in darker colours. The difference is so stark. This red is not doing the 458 justice at all. Ferrari should send out some cars in grey or dark blue colours. Enough with the red!
