Bad Luck Or Bad Design? GT-R Owner's Minor Traffic Bump Nets $18,000 Repair Bill
I consider myself a fairly competent driver, I can drive reasonably quickly on a circuit, and read the road ahead enough to make good progress on the public highway. But I had an accident, and it was all my own doing.
I had a low speed crash into the back of a white van, it was a badly surfaced road, we were stopped, pulled away.... and the person infront of the van stopped for no reason, causing the van to tap the tow bar of the car infront and me in sympathy to do the same to the van.
Ok enough of the excuses, I am posting here to make sure noone makes the same mistake I did. I thought long and hard about posting this, but i think it is important that other GTR owners see this so they aren't stung by a careless accident and the GTR Tax!
I bumped into tho the white vans tow bar causing this small crack in my bumper...

your comment doesn't even make sense.
so the owner caused a crack on the bumper. and he want to have it replaced by the factory/dealer. the factory/dealer quote him 18k for the replacement. and you comment was GTR is a cheap thrill? instead of blood sucking dealer and outrageously priced factory parts (as all other manufactures)
If your right brain has anything left or left brain has anything right, you would know to replace the bumper for a car has the performance that is on par with GTR, say a porsche 911 turbo, would cost just as much, if not more.

This is the price we pay when we concern ourselves with trying to make the pedestrian's ride across our hood more cushiony. I am not buying a car with a pedestrian safety system after seeing this.

Yea but maybe other cars will be able to detect a human. I don't know why this one can't.

Technology Is Expensive... Especially when requiring repair.
This is clearly a case of 'Gotta Pay To Play'

Why would the damn bumper cost $18k? Then how much would a Ferrari or other high end super cars' bumpers cost? $50k???
Anyhow, this has NOTHING to do with bad design, any car would have such crack if hit by a tow bar. The question is why is the damn dealer charging so much to replace a stupid bumper?? My advice, order the bumper and just replace it on your own buddy, its a mapper of few bolts and that's it.

What a money grab from Nissan!!!! It's like all those Taurus', Audi's and VW's that fall apart right after the warranty runs out!! This one was clearly planted!

new Nissans in general have weak/expensive bumpers (if you can call them that), the IIHS does those 5mph bumper crashes and Nissans are among the most expensive

This pedestrian safety thing is a rip-off. there is no manufacturer who would be able to meet 5mph regulations with this systems if fitted to US-bound cars. It says, inter alia, that in a 5mph crash there should be no damage to any part of the vehicle except the bumper. In this case the damn bonnet has popped up and a host of other parts have to be replaced. Damn foolishness. Why in the name of all things good and great couldn't Nissan fit a reset feature where the hydraulic actuators retract? Why does the ECU have to be fried? It seems to me that Nissan is truly out to shaft owners of this car royally. An without KY. They can go to hell with it actually, because I wouldn't buy that toad of a car anyway. Give me a Z06 in Blade Silver Metallic please...

GT-R cant outbrake a van? That guy has slow reflexes and shouldn't be driving a GT-R in the first place.

It has a carbon fiber bumper that has to be completely replaced...that is not plastic!
The ECU fries itself in a crash and can not be reset because Nissan wants to make the GTR unobtanium and made it hard to trick out the computer.
The car company does not care! They wanted to make the best car, it costs money boo hoo...If this was on a Ferrari it would not have been as expensive, if it was a Lamborghini it would have been as expenstive because they use a carbon fiber bumper too.
