Review: The Ultimate SUV antidote?

My first experience with a new generation 5 series had not ended well: liked the car, hated the iDrive and electronic steering. Overall, the experience left me wondering whether BMW’s image would continue as “the ultimate driving machine.”

Silly me.

Having just spent a week with a 530xi Touring, I’m looking for new superlatives to describe a stirring, engaging and harmonious vehicle. I’ll start with “Wow!”

No wonder BMW’s of all types are popular with skiers: they perform impressively while making their owners look like better drivers than they may be. Just like the best skis!

Hey, folks! This is my honest opinion on this BMW. Too damn expensive! For almost 1/2 of the price, I could run out to a local Subaru store pass a local Pizza joint and pick up a Subaru Outback 3.0 / L.L. Bean Edition with 4 wheel drive for around 30k. I don't know about you folks but, to me its ridiculous how people like Mr.Gilbert here is telling everyone its great b/c he liked all these neat features inside of this car! Great but, I don't want'em or need'em! I don't need a damn ipod or idrive thing or fancy sunroof and gimmickery signal light functions. All, "I" want as an average fella - A nicely built and functional car that'll take me from point A to B. If some of you folks are as stingy as, I'm! on just about everything except for food..then why would you pay an extra 30 thousand whopping bucks to get this thing instead of a just as nice and just as functional Subaru Outback which, I'ld also like to mention - its built right here in good ole USA/Indiana, I do believe! Anyhow, for "me", I haven't found a single MB, BMW or Audi that could justify me and convince me to write off a check on any of their cars. I don't give a damn about performance either to be honest. Actually, I'd rather own a slow and steady piece of trash built in 1989 so I could save even more $ on the Insurance at Geico and stupid lizard thingy but heck, I'm currently owner of a new IS250 and at least its not breaking my bank savings! I tell ya folks, if I had it my way, I'ld have probably bought a beat-up Ford Ranger but since, I drive almost 120 miles a day or around 25,000 miles per year..I had no choice but my point being..this BMW is wayeeeee over priced!! And, Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, I'm NOT bashing BMW, either so calm your little nerves down. I'm just giving you my view of this car..and guess what? Its the best true review you would hear b/c I'm not a car salesman, hardcore BMW fan or Super Bias freeks..but just an average Joe who knows a bit about cars and that's my nook and if you don't like it...then go suck an egg. I'm finished now.

Why, haven't this cat mentioned a single thing about other important as heck criteria? Such as, Value, Customer Service, Reliability issues, Dependability issues, Efficiency, emission issues, recall history or parts and service issues to name a few??? Why? All these car reviewing dunces only have intelligence to focus on 1 or 2 things on a car? Which is Performance or Prestige? Come on...
I'll leave performance side of me on my Katana superbike.

The ramblings of an out of control idiot.

Comparing a Subaru to a BMW.

Comparing his bikes performance to this wagon.

Talking about the Geico lizard.

Telling us to suck on an egg if we dont agree with this piece of trash.

Seriously Byung.....Your credibility is now GONE.

Just what did you expect to get out of this crap.

Not a discussion.

BTW- You are bashing BMW.

The Subaru Outback is a good buy. However, unless you are an average joe who isn't really into cars (posting on an automotive website doesn't mean you are into cars) the BMW, however large the jump in price, is a MUCH MUCH better vehicle.

I'm not just talking gadgets and handling, I mean the BMW (much like all European built cars) has a feeling of integrity and depth of engineering and thought that a Subaru Outback could only dream of.

Unless you are really into cars, you will have no idea what I mean. You maybe one of those nannying consumer report obsessed drongos who buys a car based purely on numbers and sales figures.

I don't know, I don't know you. But I can tell you there are a handful on this site with their heads stuck in a JD Power report.

If you are not particularly wealthy, or do not care for cars, then choosing an Outback over a BMW 5-series estate is a perfectly acceptable thing to do.

Just don't try and convince those who are passionate about cars to agree with you.

It won't happen.

These are my opinions after reading review of this BMW. First, I want to clarify one thing, which is that I have NOT bashed BMW and its MY opinions and observations and...damn..why am I talking to you again..Go ahead and use your mighty racial undertone again too! Don't forget your meds. Oh btw, have you stopped wearing diapers yet?

You both have completely missed my point. I didn't compare Subaru Outback to a BMW. What, I'm trying to state is that price is set too high and for 1/2 the price you could own just as good solidly built and capable car and have 30k to pay off your house mortgage and, I'm sure many folks would agree with me on this. Also, even if money wasn't a issue, I'd choose a Subaru or a beat up pickup over this to go sking if you wanna. You both are missing my point..because your mindset is back to performance and prestige. BTW, I would never try to convince anyone of anything..as, I have stated..it is my "OPINION".

Comparing a Camry to a IS250. There are 2 completely different monsters. Wheelbase, Size of car FWD Vs. Rwd. Why not compare a 1 series to a 3 series. Or a 325 to a Camry? Bmw shares parts bewteen its 1 series econobox and other models in its lineup.

Since when is Lexus and An A-B car like a honda?

Again another pretentious BMW lover.

The only BMW that justified its price was the M3.

Byung knows nothing about german cars.

And he is simply jealous over the fact that he doesnt drive one.

Hence his telling me to take my meds and once again bringing up diapers.

He is a sad little man who wishes he had a BMW.

I see these drivers all the time.

Totally agree Matthew about people on this board with their heads stuck in a JD Power report.

These guys seem to think that equals an excellent car.

I couldnt disagree more.

Why should I pay $60,000.00 just for a bimmer?

I could pay $6,000 beat up Ford Ranger and be more satisfied.

that's all.
peace :)

You go buy your Ranger.

We don't need to know about your fetish for inferior products.

If you are satisfied with a heap of crap, then by all means go and satisfy your cravings.

Thing is, no one really cares about your stupidity, we don't want to know what flavour dog food you eat.

Why did you buy an IS250 then? An old Yugo does exactly the same thing, yet it doesn't matter if you spill your dog food on the seats.

"You are not too bright, do you know that? theboltski was only makin parallels between Byung's argument and other equaly idiotic arguments."

If you read some of bolkski's other post you would understand my response better.

He is a constant complainer of lexus' products.

An ugly face that now has a fat ass. Seriously, the next generation 5, 7 and X3 has to be better - it cannot get any worse, can it?
