Consumer Group Pressures Obama Administration To Up Economy Standards To 45 MPG
Consumer advocates want the Obama administration to raise average fuel economy standards to 45 mpg by 2020, citing the availability of necessary technology and public concern about gasoline prices.

The administration has proposed raising fuel-efficiency requirements 40 percent - to 35.5 miles per gallon - by 2016 for cars and light trucks combined. It plans to adopt final rules in April.

"We want to make sure we don't just rest on the 2016 numbers and that we're prepared today, and get the industry to prepare, to move substantially beyond 2016," Jack Gillis, a Consumer Federation of America spokesman and author of The Car Book, told reporters on a conference call today.

This is idiotic. I have always been a firm believer in letting consumers (and not so called "consumer groups") decide fuel standards with their checkbooks. If Americans want fuel efficient vehicles, they will buy them. It is simple enough. Continuing to raise MPG standards will only serve to hurt the already embattled and struggling GM and Chrysler.

"cuz my money will not go to a conventional car that gets 45 mpg unless it has a very good yo descent 0 to 60 time and can carry 4 in comfort."

So what is so important about 0-60? Cars like this already exist in markets outside of North America. Their only "problem", which isn't really a problem at all, is that they don't do 0-60 in under 7-8 seconds.

So long as law enforcement/government vehicles abide by the same standards.

If necessary exceptions to the rule are already foreseeable, the proposed rule is flawed. There are plenty of public and private citizens that are extremely important and need a vehicle that will have a tough time meeting these standards. The question you have to ask yourself, are we going to make exceptions for these people too?

Why??? Some groups have too much power.

Has anybody else heard about the University that was hacked into? 1079 emails and 72 documents of epicness.

I have Joe, So far our main stream media has been reluctant to talk about it. There is also evidence that the Al Gore documentary has 9 key points that have been proven to be false. We need to be good sewards of this god given planet, but the majority of this is bologna.

Well its either the micro/economy class car or a 600cc SS/650cc standard motorcycle. I will take the latter.

Appointed by who? Anyhow, I just wonder if this is the same group who advises women to do mammographies every two years and not do SBE's. Totally unrelated, but see where I'm going with this? At some point common sense has to prevail and "over governing" can become a problem.

HyundaiSmoke, have you ever driven a large vehicle? For many people the high vantage point and size of the vehicle make them feel safer. What good is getting 50mpg if you die young?

Feeling Safer and Being Safer are two completely different things.

Thats why i laugh my head off every time i drive past an SUV that has rolled {Many in the USA}

So many Idiots in Shitty SUVs driving like they are in regular cars and then scratching their heads when they loose control and crash or Roll.

Shitty SUV List is anything not from Germany. but top 10 is Anything from BIG 3 USA Manufacturers.

Death Traps I call Them.

Ford will do it in another 8 years without a hybrid, there 3L V-6 Coyote engine for 2011 F-150 will have 400 HP and 400LBS of torque and is more efficient than before, I believe that we can appease the environmental zealots and still have something we want to drive.

HS:

"Dont get me wrong, I like Big trucks. Why cant someone just make a smaller Truck the size of a GMC Canyon that gets 35 MPG? Why cant someone make a larger Diesel truck (Yukon Sized) that gets 28-30 MPG, and can be converted to run on veg?'

my '94 toyota truck DOES GET 35 mpg. (hypermiling under ideal conditions.) and it is rated to haul 3/4 tons too. 1620# to be exact.

so this technology/capacity existed 15 years ago! but it was NOT supported because too few people appreciated it. even today's Tacoma has gotten bigger (without any increase in carrying capacity).

the problem is, americans generally DON'T CARE about burning more fuel than they need to, as long as gas is cheap.

the choice is guys, either congress will have to mandate higher fleet mpg averages, or RAISE GAS TAXES so that people come to their senses and at least ATTEMPT to save fuel.

of course, doing nothing will make global oil resources SHRINK sooner. especially as more chinese and indians get their own cars. then gas prices will shoot past $5-7 a gallon even WITHOUT taxes on the stuff!

Depends on what the Pack you refer to is.

If you mean Engines available in USA then you might have a point.

Fords Ecoboost 3L for 2011 gets 400hp and 400 lbs of torque, when I referred to the pact I meant them all, if you disagree please state something that out performs this Ford engine and get good gas mileage. 133hp per L
