300 HP And 30 MPG - Has The Mustang Just Redefined The Pony Car Market?

300 HP And 30 MPG - Has The Mustang Just Redefined The Pony Car Market?

The base model of the 2011 Ford Mustang will come with nearly GT power and could get up to 30 miles per gallon in highway driving, Ford Motor Co. announced today.

Ford will debut a new V-6 engine for the sports car this week at the Los Angeles Auto Show and says it will give the basic Mustang power to rival the performance-oriented Mustang GT, which has a V-8 under its hood.

The 3.7-liter powerplant, which replaces the 4-liter V-6 now in Mustangs, will produce 305 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque while also offering better gas mileage.

Ford projects the engine will get 19 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. The 2010 Mustang's 4-liter engine creates 210 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque, while achieving 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

Great going FORD!! I am finally proud to say that I am impressed!

Can't wait to hear what we have in store regarding the V8!

they're putting in the 400hp-ish 5.0L Coyote V8. It'll be nice to have a real Mustang 5.0 again.

It's about time they replaced that gawd-awful 4.0L.

That thing was a beast...and not in good way. Way too slow for a V6 that size...it guzzled gas like an engine twice its size and it didn't even sound that nice a WoT.

This new engine should have been put in when they knew the Charger was coming back...hell even when the confirmed rumours of the Camaro. Not nearly after a year the Chevy was released.

Another fine example of how the NA OEMs are slow to react. Better late than never I guess.

Camaro-who?
The Mustang is a better car than the Camaro in the long run now it has the power and MPG to stand out.

you speak in present tense which makes your comment false. honestly, this news simply say that Ford will FINALLY have a competitive V6. In present models, the Camaro is the better buy.

it's ok anyone know if this engine still has solid lifters like the current 3.5 and 3.7 litter motors? I heard they had to use them to make the engine cheaper and fit into more cars from packaging.

Actually it's a smart move, much like something BMW would do, which personally, is the best at staggering product changes. Ford knew the 2010 Mustang would sell well due to the redesign anyway, so they put off the major change engine for 1 more year, and hopefully next year overtake the sales title from the Camaro.

Now if you can add 3000lbs (as in vehicle weight) then we'll have a complete car.

Impressive technology, nothing comes close to Fords new engine as far as economy and power are concerned.

Eco-Boost is going to do a lot of good for Ford.

Pretty good move for Ford, this should do well against the Genesis coupe and probably take sales from it.
