BMW's 5-Series GT Takes On Competition, But Does It Really Have Comparable Competitors?

BMW's 5-Series GT Takes On Competition, But Does It Really Have Comparable Competitors?

First came the Skoda Superb, and now a premium brand is trying to get in on the twin-opening tailgate craze.

The new 5-Series GT takes the prestige and comfort of BMW’s saloons and adds a swooping rear end, taller ride height and that flexible new tailgate. Its clever bootlid can be opened like that of a hatchback or a saloon, so it caters for all tastes.

Distinctive looks aim to capture the imagination of buyers who want something different, and the BMW has no direct competitor in its sights. So, to find out how it rates, we’ve drawn together a trio of models for one of our unique triple twin tests....

But the average consumer will cross-shop the BMW with the Honda and Acura models with similar characteristics. Many of the everyday consumers don't know the cost differences b/t the luxury and mainstream vehicles, so they'll have to cross-shop in order to see the larger picture.

The 5-series GT seems like a wagon to other people and so it'll most-likely be cross-shopped with other wagons and similar sized SUVs too.

since when does the average consumer cross shop acuras, bmws, and hondas the average consumer knows that these 3 brands have a large difference in price its the enthusiasts that knows that gap isnt as large as the average person thinks. People dont cross shop the 5, e class, rl, and accord that makes no sense.....Now on the GT the fact it doesnt have a direct competitor like the X6 and the only cars that in concept are similiar are thousands less im sure will hurt them. The crosstour in concept is identical to the GT as is a bunch of other ungainly vehicles of the past, but the ZDX from a practical stand point isnt like either of these 2 cars.....

"Not at the 5 GT's price point. Completely different market sectors."

Don't even go there. Whenever anyone tried to compare the M3 to the CTS-V because of price, whoa!!! Everyone was up in arms bitching that the CTS is an M5 competitor.

The 5 GT competes with the ZDX and Crosstour, no matter the price. If you take the $30k "heritage" fee out of the equation, the ZDX and 5 GT would be direct competitors on all fronts.

dumpsty:

since when does the 'average' consumer cross-shop a $75,000 car with a $35,000 car. kinda like cross-shopping a camry with an E-class.

yeah...and you'll have to take out the 4.4 liter twin-turbo V8, the 7-series interior, the technology, the design, the handling and $30,000. since when do people cross shop cars that cost nearly double?

Nop,...there is direct competitors.....I have not seen other cars so ugly like this but ZDX and Crosstour are good competitiors if we are talking about shape, design and usability.

Yep. The Crosstour and ZDX will give you just about every attribute that the 5-Series GT has, for alot less money.

or quality, driving dynamics, luxury materials, sporty engine..... the list goes on and on.

Anthony: and it is an smarter choice...and I am almost sure that will spend lest time in the shop than the 5GT.

not to ruin your hate parade with logic or anything, but if you guys bothered to read any of the reviews of the 5GT (and there have been many recently), you'd probably be surprised to find out they've all been exceptionally positive. Of course you probably wouldn't care either way, as it's much easier to simply regurgitate the opinions of people who have neither seen nor driven the car than to actually form one based on experience and merit. Please proceed.

also most people commenting couldn't even begin to dream about affording one. It's so easy to be negative about something way out of your price range!

I have touched this BMW but not driven it yet. I am VERY impressed with it's space and comfort offerings. The Honda product (Crosstour and ZDX) look "similar" but are rather ugly in comparison. The GT has much better proportions and styling than the homely Cross/ZDX. They can be cross shopped on shape and function, but pricing is dramatically different.

JRobUSC : Dear friend, I think that the 5GT will be a good car as long as it lives, I love it inside, but outside the car is UGLY. Regarding the reilability , I do belive the reviews but for Now Honda still ahead of them in Reliability....the Honda or Acura still Ugly, and inside, the BMW is the king..thats final.... for now. If this a war, the Honda and the Acura have the edge for the price.

Yonder, dear friend, looks are subjective. Personally I think it looks fine, much better in person than photos (photos make it look significantly more bulbous and ponderous than it is in real life), and actually pretty good looking considering the unique utilitarian aspects of the car. You are free to disagree, but your opinion is just that -- an opinion.

No matter which you choose, you're still competiting for "ugliest car of the year".

There are two obvious competitors: Honda CrossTour, and Acura ZDX.
The ZDX is heading to take the X6 sales, while the CrossTour will definitely take the 5GT.

I'm quite sure that the people that want BMW will buy the 3, 7, X5 (and in our country the X6 instead of the X5).

For wagons, the people will buy Honda/any non luxury car.
