The Ghost is awesome, unlike the premiere of the new A8 that was, well let's just say it was a bit on the bland side.

Agreed. The new A8 exterior was a bit disappointing b/c of the bland, non-descriptive front/rear facias. The Ghost has been very exciting. BMW has done an excellent job at making sure that the new Roller doesn't remind anyone of a 7-series.
I really do like the Ghost...even more over the Phantom b/c it isn't as "blocky". In the case of the Ghost --- a little less means a lot more --- in terms of overall sizing and scale.

Ok so here we have one of the most expensive cars in the world and look at the detail(or should I say lack there of) on the door panel! Sure, it is made from the highest quality materials money can buy. But; shall we say BORING!!. And visible speaker grills? what is up with that? NO character, No nice contrasting shapes or anything. Wow. How sad. Maybe Rolls should have taken a page from the Porsche Panamera or Maserati Quatroporte play book on how to do a classy and stylish interior. HMMMM.

Quattroporte is Swoopy with Flowing Lines With an Interior to Match.
Panamera is the Same, Curvy with Interior to Match.
Phantom is a BLOCK with little unnecessary detailing both Externally & Internally and it works for the Phantom.
If you want chintz go buy a Maybach.

first off.....Autoknologist.....the ghost is "NOT" a sports car as is the Quattro was born from a sports car family with the reason being it having the swoopy lines and sports car look to it. I would get the ghost over the Bentley Flying Spur being that the Spur is the ghosts main Competition. I think BMW did a hell of a job on the ghost that stainless steel hood is key at this point and it makes that car stand out like a sore thumb over ANYTHING else in its class. BMW took the 750li and made it 10 times better and it shows....
This car has style class, elegance, and sportiness with that big V12 under the hood. Like lots of other people say I can see myself driving this and being chauffered in it. BMW merging with Bentley I think has worked out great for them.

Bentley Continental range sold and is selling very well. I think ghost will give Continental a good fight and will steal many of it's buyers.

So I never did fully understand: is this based on the old 7-Series platform, or the brand-new one?

Sigh, I wish people would comment on the merits of the subject vehicle rather than trying to make it somehow appear better by mindless disparagement of a different manufacturer's product.
One of the nice things about a Rolls (and other upper end vehicles) is that you can customize the interior to your liking. Of course it will cost more but if you were concerned about price you wouldn't be shopping for a RR in the first place.
