Will The New Lexus GS and GS-F Put a Dent Into BMW 5 and Mercedes E Sales?

It's looking like 2011 will be the year a next-generation Lexus GS finally hits U.S. showrooms. When it does, as we've previously reported, expect to see a high performance Lexus GS F version join the party.

As always, with every manufacturer, it depends on how good the car is. The car isn't out yet though.

I will say that the current-generation is an attractive-enough car in its own right.

The GS still lacks the refinement that the E and the 5er have. The GS would need to step it up across the board in refinement, performance, safety, gadgets, and luxury to put a dent in the sales of the E, 5er, and A6.

There's nothing to dent in the sales of the A6.

do you even know what refinement means? have you ever driven a lexus? it is nothing, if not refined. mercedes-benz engines don't run as smoothly as lexus engines, and BMW's ride and cabin noise levels are higher. Lexus always wins on refinement, loses on everything else. if you knew the first thing about cars, you'd know that.

While I am an owner of an LS the GS model is my favorite of all time for Lexus, even back in it's Toyota Aristo days. When I was looking for a Lexus to buy I did find the GS not so refined compared to an Audi or the E-class. The BMW was out of the picture due to it's horrific interior (IMO). The new GS should raise its quality level a bit higher to better itself against its rivals.

As for refinement vs Mercedes I think they are pretty close. My S550 is still a bit quieter than my LS but it's nothing to really nag about. Cars today are so well built we're all just bickering at the littlest things that most consumers won't even notice, just to find a victor. It's all subjective. Each to his or her own.

GS/GS-F, E/E63, A6/S6/RS6, 5er/M5, XF, whatever you want they are pretty refined these days and you can't truly truly go wrong. All of these will look nice in your Beverly Hills mansion driveway.

The GS has came a long way i like all 3 generations so far but the GS needs a WOW factor. The E-class and 5 series have been doing it for a while now the GS can have what it takes to be a very tough competitor in that class but toyota is about safe auto designing and reliability and they have been doin that for years. its like they dont want to go outside of their comfort zone which i cant blame them for that either. at the end of the day buisness is buisness.

Now my thing with the GS-F is that will it be a $150,000 lexus when they roll it out and I can get a BMW M5 $50,000 cheaper just about....you know it all comes down to the cost of manufacturing the car also. I say if lexus keeps playing it safe they will not put a dent in any german car manufacturer IMO.

Where did you see that it would cost 150k? The IS-F is priced competitively so why wouldnt the GS-F?

Just because the LF-A is ridiculously priced doesn't mean the GS will be.

B7FAN, you have got to be kidding. Do you really think "any" GS will cost $150? These are cars that sell for no more that 58K USD today, topped out.

It is very likely a very good car, but to my eyes, it looks boring. Typical "someone's dad's car" type of thing.

The GS has never really been a player in this market, its biggest competitor has never been the 5er, E class or the A6 but the ES. The ES is just as big inside (maybe bigger) less money, offers Lexus reliabilty and is front wheel drive.

Wow, the idiocy on this site is painful. Dude, the GS has never has FWD, 'ever' in its existence. You shouldn't even be talking here.

do you guys read? the GS-F will be available 2011. A brand new chassis, brand new car. All this according to Motor Trend. The GS will be brand new, much lighter, more fuel efficient as well. The GS-F is said to have carbon fiber parts and weigh in the neighborhood of 3500lbs.! That's 700 pounds less than comparable cars like the CTS-V the E63, the M5, XFR. With 460+ HP? That's better power and less weight than the current IS-F! And probably a better power to weight ratio than it's competitors. The article said along with the new GS the next generation IS should be introduced around the same time.

Don't think Lexus ain't goin for the jugglar veins especially after releasing thier halo supercar(Lexus LFA) which in my observation will just steal the show every where it shows up.

so the GS has the same wheelbase as an Infiniti G37, but cost MORE than the current M adn most likely more then tne 2011 M ... and this new car is supposed to be great how? who cares if the GS-F has 460 HP the new regular M56 will have 420 and probebaly be faster anyway.

Yeah well one thing is for sure...Lexus will always be up there with the top 3, Merc, BMW and Lexus...always irregardless of who's the fastest. When it comes down to it, its about class, prestige and image and Infiniti will never out class Lexus. They just dont have it like that.
